SMART VENDING & CONNECTED MACHINES The future, now: transforming vending with cloud and AI
The convergence of cloud and artificial intelligence is transforming vending operations, leading to improved uptime, higher revenues, and more efficient use of staff and delivery resources. Martin Duemling, senior product manager of SECO provides an overview of advances in AI-inspired vending functionality, presenting an exciting glimpse of the future that outlines how such technology could lead to increasingly automated vending operations
T
he integration of digital technologies has transformed the performance of vending machines. Once mainly standalone mechanical devices, vending machines have seen the
widespread adoption of electronics systems and components, making them far more intuitive and easier to operate and maintain. More recently, the introduction of telemetry platforms has meant
that vending machines have become more connected, supporting greater efficiency and transparency of operations. Now, the convergence of cloud computing and artificial intelligence presents new possibilities, enabling vending owners and operators to leverage real-time data and insights, unlocking new efficiencies and enhancing profitability. In short, the vending industry is undergoing an exciting period of innovation, as AI-inspired solutions transform operational capability.
OVERCOMING TRADITIONAL VENDING CHALLENGES To fully understand the potential of this digital transformation, it is worth examining how traditional approaches to vending machine operations can lead to restrictive outcomes for both owners and operators. Historically, unautomated approaches such as cyclic refilling have led to inefficient resource allocation, where staff visit machines that don’t need replenishment. Calendar-based maintenance has also resulted in technical teams checking the performance of vending machines, even though they are operating without fault. Alternatively, and perhaps more worryingly, the machine may have failed, and nobody has realised this until the next scheduled visit. Such approaches represent a costly operational expense, with fuel,
labour, and logistics charges impacting profitability. The lack of real- time, data-driven oversight of machines has also led to static pricing and inventory management, limiting the ability to maximise revenue through more dynamic operational approaches. Increasingly, the vending machine industry has recognised that the emergence of digital technologies, such as cloud and AI, presents a

unique opportunity to eliminate these hindrances. Vending machine operators want to deploy new software-driven platforms that provide real-time insight. Vending machines no longer need to be isolated machines; they can be connected, cloud-powered devices that continuously transmit operational data. This cloud-based infrastructure offers the promise of centralised control, seamless updates, and access to live data across all vending locations, providing owners and operators with unparalleled operational visibility.
THE BENEFITS OF TELEMETRY PLATFORMS So, what sort of hardware and software infrastructure enables cloud- based vending? At SECO, for example, this functionality is delivered via the Clea Vend telemetry platform, which is designed for vending machine refilling and sales management. It provides real-time monitoring, sales analysis, error management, and operational efficiency for vending machines, with the ability to perform remote configuration. The platform comes with multiple connectivity options. It can be enabled through direct integration with the KarL4 contactless- only reader payment terminal, which allows vending machine customers to make secure and intuitive payments using their debit and credit cards. KarL4 serves as an interface for data collection, providing actionable insights to vending machine operators. These insights include automatic alerts for machine failures, sales, and transaction analytics, as well as smarter proposals for inventory and replenishment. This enables the prevention of revenue losses, reduction of costs, and an increase in sales. Vending machine operators can also access telemetry services independently of payment. Connectivity is also available through the Datalogger, which can be retrofitted to any machine deployed in the field, or through a standardised API, either cloud-to-cloud or directly from the machine if integration is enabled. These options enable a broader range of vending machine operators – from those with single deployments to thousands of machines – to benefit from
