Sustainability is a buzz word in vending, but what is driving developments and how do they benefit operators, end users and the industry. The Vending & Automated Retail Association (AVA) has some insight The adoption of greener solutions is being driven
largely by legislation changes, end-user preferences and cost-saving opportunities. Meanwhile operators are integrating eco-friendly
packaging, energy-efficient machines and waste reduction strategies to meet both legal requirements and market demand.
TRENDS IN SUSTAINABLE VENDING • Operators compliance to the latest legislation including Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) and Deposit Return Schemes (DRS) are changing the way we view packaging and waste management. Mandatory Cup Takeback programmes and the single-use cup levy are pushing the industry toward recyclable and reusable solutions.
• The vending industry is beginning to move away from plastic cups and move towards fibre-based and biodegradable solutions to reduce environmental impact. With smart waste management systems in vending machines, collection and recycling rates are vastly improving in the industry as well.
• Vending machines are the most energy-efficient they have ever been with LED lighting, improved refrigeration, motion sensor technology and more. AI-driven inventory management not only ensures machines operate efficiently and reduce energy consumption, it also minimises waste and stock loss.
• Consumers are demanding more organic, plant- based and low-carbon footprint products than ever before. It is becoming more common today to source and supply ethical and carbon-neutral vending options than any other products.
AVA chief executive David Llewellyn said: “Leaning into sustainable vending will lower operating costs for operators as they become more energy efficient and reduce waste. They will improve their brand reputation by appealing more to end-users and in offering for sustainable options, they will be compliant with new and future regulations. “As an industry, the more sustainable options we can
offer, the stronger we position ourselves in the future especially with more sustainability-driven regulations coming into play.
“Sustainable vending is no longer a passing trend but a fundamental shift in society. Businesses that embrace innovation, comply with regulations and prioritise eco- conscious solutions will thrive in an increasingly green market.”
