association comment GIMA product innovators celebrated at Glee

Garden Industry Manufacturer’s Association (GIMA) members had a Glee to remember, with accolades and awards aplenty

It was an extra successful year for GIMA members launching new products at Glee, with several winning top industry accreditations through the GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund and the Glee New Product Awards.

South Dorset start-up West Country Soil Improvement Ltd had perhaps the best start anyone could have had at their first Glee. The company’s Bloomin Amazing product impressed both GIMA and Glee judges with its eco-friendly credentials; winning the 2018 GIMA Innovators Seed Corn Fund, worth £6,000, and the Best of British Glee New Product Award.

Bloomin Amazing is a 3-in-1 dig-free soil enricher, feed and mulch and an organic by- product of the company’s Anaerobic Digester renewable energy plant. Safe to handle and odour-free, Bloomin Amazing has already proven to be effective by regular agricultural

customers from local farms and the Duchy of Cornwall.

UK doormat supplier Primeur sponsored Glee’s Retail Lab for the second year running, and were rewarded with an especially successful run in the Glee New Product Awards. Its Recycled Rubber Stepping Stones Medallion won Best Landscaping Product and overall Best New Product, with its new Landscape Edge product shortlisted, helping to announce its successful venture into the landscaping market.

Smart Garden Products had the largest Glee stand ever, at 623sqm and six metres tall. “Our stand was a celebration as much as it was a statement of intent in terms of our commitment to remaining a core supplier to the garden industry,” a company spokesperson noted. “We’ve had an incredibly positive Glee, launching 365 new products, many of which were in brand new sectors for us. To be

rewarded with two award wins and shortlisted for another is fantastic and compounds another successful year for the business.” Westland also won two Glee New Product Awards — one in the Wildlife and Pets category for its Peckish Squirrel Proof Suet Pellets, part of a range that has been improved with new resealable packets, and its Deadfast rodenticides range which won the hotly contested Best Garden Care – Chemicals, Fertilisers and Growing Media category. Westland brand manager Daniella Constantine commented: “With cutting edge new active ingredients and partnering with the ultimate experts in physical rodent control, Victor®, we have been able to develop this range of products that promise to make controlling rodents in and around the home as humane, quick and hassle-free as possible.” Patio cleaning products specialist Block Blitz won the best Tools and Machinery product award with its Big Blitz Jumbo Pan and Brush which allows a long handle to attach to transform it into a shovel. Two runners up nominations added to the company’s Glee show success for its Multi Pave Treatment and Block Shield. Working in partnership with fellow GIMA members Kelkay, founder and managing director Dave Moore said: “Our product range is expanding, and our business is gathering pace — with exciting plans imminent in terms of manufacturing and business development.”

The issue surrounding single use plastic in the garden industry helped Tildenet Gardenware to another Glee New Products Award in the Best Garden Care – Growing Accessories category. Its Haxnicks Bamboo Pots and Seed Trays are specifically labelled as ‘plastic-free’ to appeal to the growing amount of customers pushing for alternatives from manufacturers and retailers.

Haxnicks’ prolific inventor and founder Damian Cardozo commented: “The appetite is there for sustainable pots so it is the right time for this product. We are thrilled Glee has recognised Haxnicks Bamboo Pots and Seed Trays and excited about playing our part in turning the tide of plastic use." GIMA director Vicky Nuttall added: “Congratulations to our Seed Corn Fund Winner, Bloomin Amazing, as well as all the GIMA members that were successful in the New Product Awards, including Burgon & Ball, Deco-Pak, Fallen Fruits, Gardman, Greenkey Garden & Home Ltd, the Solar Centre and Zest 4 Leisure who were all shortlisted.”
