Solar carports
According to new research from renewable energy specialist, the answer to UK businesses’ energy supply and decarbonisation challenges could be found in their own car parks.

amian Baker, managing director of RenEnergy, an industry leader in renewable energy solutions, has highlighted that the mandating of solar carports – canopies with solar PV panels that cover car parking spaces – would unlock signifi cant energy production in land already used for car parking. Independent research commissioned by RenEnergy has already found over half a million car parking spaces in the UK suitable for solar carports.
The ongoing investigation has so far identifi ed
a signifi cant quantity of suitable parking spaces across England and Scotland in hotels, golf clubs, hospitals, airports, amusement parks and sports centres. This reportedly “only scratches the surface” of the opportunity.

Commercial opportunity
Specialist RenEnergy, has stated that it expects that hundreds of thousands more potential sites could be found as it continues its research across colleges, universities and sports stadiums. The project is set to uncover more across the entire UK, looking at commercial car parks such as train stations, service stations, supermarkets and retail parks.
