hand soldering champion “Highlights need for technician-level training”
Alan Anderson Manufacturing increases workforce to support major investment at UK CEM
Advanced Rework Technology Ltd (A.R.T.), the leading independent provider of IPC-certified and bespoke training services for the electronics assembly industry, has named Justyna M, a technician with Zettlex, a product line of Celera Motion, as the IPC UK hand soldering champion. This is the fourth time that Cambridge-based Justyna has won the award.
The contest was held at the recent Southern Manufacturing & Electronics show and attracted almost 30 entrants. A.R.T. organized and judged the event on behalf of IPC. Commented A.R.T. director John Vickers: “We would like to offer Justyna our congratulations. She produced a fully functional board, gaining a near-perfect score in under 60 minutes. Just to emphasize her achievement, we received only two fully functional and two partially functional boards from all the contestants. However, this does also highlight the very real need for good training at the electronics technician level.”
A.R.T. offers a range of IPC-certified and bespoke electronics manufacturing courses, held at its own state of the art facilities in Witham, Essex, or at customers’ own premises.

Joining AA Manufacturing as Sales Director is Michael Knight, who formerly held a similar post at another UK CEM. Other new hires include four new production staff and two SMT engineers who previously worked together in a team at a UK plant that is now moving offshore. Adds Bray: “Keeping manufacturing close to the end market improves quality, speeds manufacturing time and saves waste. We believe in employing the best, experienced people and we are happy that all the new hires have chosen to bring their skills and expertise to AA Manufacturing.”

Improved speed and precision: Panasonic Industry
presents the new Laser marking system LP-RH On-the-fly marking at high speeds is only one of the comprehensive features of the LP-RH series
The new LP-RH CO2 laser marking systems are specially designed for industries with particularly high demands on speed and functionality and are available with 10W, 20W, and 30W output.
They offer a remarkable improvement in marking and processing quality. Thanks to the ultra-fast galvanometer scanner, they can mark moving objects on-the-fly up to a conveyor speed of 240m/min.
With their small laser beam diameter, some models are particularly suitable for marking small components with extremely fine markings. Due to their shorter wavelength of 9.3μm, some
models are ideal for marking transparent plastics such as PET or PC. The CO2 laser also makes it possible to mark organic materials such as paper and wood.
In stock at Powell Electronics, the supplier of connectors and more for high-rel applications including defence, aerospace and industrial, is the STAR-PAN integrated soldier multiport USB data hub / power distribution system from Glenair. The product provides network data access, peripheral connectivity and smart battery power management for soldiers - from standard light infantry to Joint Terminal Attack Controllers (JTACs) – and enables them to make the most of C4ISR (Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance) electronics, while optimizing power monitoring and distribution performance.
STAR-PAN power/data hubs and cables are designed for optimal size, weight, power, and ruggedized mil-spec performance with battle-tested environmental and EMC sealing and shielding. They provide the soldier with: Ethernet; USB and RS232 compatible peripheral support; software- defined radio support for all Mil-Std. and NATO platforms; charging, scavenging and battery power control; Android compatible power management and monitoring as well as across-the-board interoperability with US and NATO standards.
The power/data hubs are ideal for use in Digitally Aided Close Air Support (DACAS) missions, including precision targeting, tactical radio communications, real-time video downlink, night vision technologies, GPS/navigation, blue force tracking, personal computing and smart phone integration.
www.powell.com A seamless workflow is essential
The start-up time has been significantly reduced from 90 to 15 seconds to increase work efficiency and avoid unwanted production interruptions.
Thanks to the newly integrated motor, engraving achieves impressive homogeneity, speed, and precision compared to the previous series. The marking field of this series is up to 160x160 mm, and a new scanning method for Data Matrix Codes reduces cycle times by up to 40% without any loss in quality.
Improved focus for precise alignment
With our latest innovation, fine adjustment of the focusing setting is child’s play. The working distance can be easily adjusted from -/+ 3 mm without moving the laser head. This function guarantees precise alignment and makes fine adjustment much easier, making work processes more efficient.
The updated PC software Laser Marker NAVI smart presents a user-friendly interface that simplifies maintenance history management. The NAVI smart software also informs you immediately when maintenance is required so that your system always remains in optimum condition.
