Flex Power Modules adds active current sharing to DC-DC converter

F

lex Power Modules introduces the BMR490 DC-DC converter with active current sharing. The current sharing capability enables two or more converters to be used in parallel for demanding datacom applications, thus delivering higher power on a single rail and improving redundancy.

Up to six BMR490 converters may be used in parallel. When used in combination with OR-ing, this increases redundancy, because power will still be supplied if one or more converters fails. If redundancy is not required, the converters can be used in parallel without OR-ing diodes, which increases efficiency. Compared to using traditional droop load sharing (DLS), the BMR490 enables better thermal balance between load and sharing units. This is due to the higher accuracy achieved by active current sharing, and the fact that each unit can deliver higher output power in parallel mode than any competitive solution – up to 1260W per module over the full input voltage range, with droop of 200mV at full power and nominal input. Olle Hellgren, director of product management and business development at Flex Power Modules, says: “The BMR490 is a step ahead of competitors’ products – it is the only module of its class that can offer active current sharing, with the benefits of higher accuracy that this technology delivers.” The BMR490 is a non-isolated DC-DC converter in the compact quarter-brick form factor (58.4 x 36.8 x 14.5 mm /

2.3 x 1.45 x 0.57 in). It can provide an output power of up to 1300W, with an input voltage range of 40V to 60V, and output voltage of 12V. The converter offers high efficiency of typically 97.3 per cent at 53Vin and half load, in part due to the fact that it is the industry’s first parallelable Hybrid Regulated Ratio (HRR) module.

The BMR490 with active current sharing is available from October 2019. Flex Power Modules, a division of Flex, designs and manufactures scalable power supply solutions that improve the operational efficiencies of advanced data center, IT information and communications networks. Flex Power Modules also offers a wide product range for the Industrial/Transportation sector. Flex Power Modules’ products provide a complete onboard system solution for cloud, storage and server applications and address customer challenges while delivering superior quality, cost and performance at scale.

RS Components introduces new series of DC-DC power converters

R

S Components (RS), the trading brand of Electrocomponents

plc, has introduced a series of 1W and 2W DC- DC converters from TRACO Power that are suitable for a broad range of applications, especially those that are cost critical and have strict space constraints.

The TBA series of isolated DC-DC converters comprises four types of 1W and 2W DC-DC converters, each coming in a SIP package. Specifically designed to offer a low-cost solution with unregulated outputs, but with no concessions on quality or operational lifetime, the TBA series includes the TBA 1/1E/1HI 1W variants, plus the TBA 2 series of 2W units. Based around a new design, the converters improve on industry-standard

features and deliver integrated and continuous short-circuit protection circuitry, an operating temperature range from –40 to +85°C without derating, and I/O isolation of either 1500 or 3000V(DC). Other key specifications include input voltage selections of 5, 12 or 24V(DC), as well as 3.3V for the TBA 1 series; an input tolerance of ±10 per cent; efficiencies up to 84 per cent; and a choice or SIP-4 or SIP-7 packages. The TRACO Power TBA series of DC-DC converters is shipping now from RS in the EMEA and Asia Pacific regions.

XP Power offers new external PSUs for industrial and healthcare applications

X

P Power has released two series of external power supplies that are intended for modern medical applications, including safety approvals for home-based healthcare, and IT applications where energy efficiency and international safety approvals are critical. Typical efficiencies for ALM150 models reach 93 per cent, and 92 per cent for the ALM200 models. All of the new PSUs meet Energy Efficiency Level VI and consume less than 0.15W in standby mode.

For medical applications, the PSUs are

approved to ANSI/AMMI ES60601-1, ANSI/AMMI HA60601-1-11, EN/IEC60601-1 and EN/IEC60601-1-11. Both series are also approved to UL/EN/IEC62368 & IEC60950 for ITE applications and carry CCC, PSE, KC & RCM approvals. The products are compliant with all the latest EMC legislation including the medical 60601-1-2 4th edition. The ALM150 series offers power levels up to 150W while the ALM200 series delivers 200W of power. Both series offer five single output versions with output voltages of 12.0V, 15.0V, 19.0V, 24.0V and 48.0V. A universal input voltage range (80 to 264VAC) is standard on both series, confirming their suitability for worldwide use and home healthcare applications. US, European and UK mains cables are available.

Due to the high efficiency, the PSUs

are housed in an IP32 vent-free plastic case. This allows for safe wipe-down of the units in environments where

hygiene is critical, such as medical applications and the food industry. The ALM150 and ALM200 series operate at temperatures between 0C and +60C and can deliver their full rated power at ambient temperatures as high as +40C.

The ALM150 / ALM200 series is available from Mouser, Digi-Key, element14, Farnell, RS Components, approved regional distributors, or direct from XP Power and offers a three year warranty.

650W AC-DC power supplies offer density for compact medical and industrial applications

M

urata has announced the PQU650 series of open-frame, 650

W-rated AC-DC power supplies by Murata Power Solutions. The PQU650 series offers the highest power-density product on the market, with forced air- and convection-cooled ambient ratings. The power supplies offer a multitude of standard features including wide output voltage adjustment range, auxiliary power rails and a high transient capability, at a competitive price.

Measuring just 6" x 4" by 1 U high, the power supplies accept a universal AC input voltage range of 90 VAC to 264 VAC. Using the latest LLC topology results in world-class efficiency levels of up to 95 per cent, the series maintains a high 450 W convection-cooled rating. This means there are no system fan requirements for applications up to 450 W at ambient temperatures as high

as 50°C, and with as little as 300 LFM forced air-cooling, the available output power rises to 650 W at an ambient temperature of 50°C. A useful peak output ‘power boost’ rating of 800 W is available for up to 30 seconds to allow initialization of inductive and capacitive loads.

Developed for industrial and medical applications, the PQU650 is an AC-DC, U- channel open-frame PSU certified to EN 60960 and IEC 60601 3rd Edition medical standards, meeting 2 x MOPP primary to secondary, and 1 x MOPP primary to chassis. An isolation figure of 4 KV AC primary to secondary, and 1500 VAC secondary to chassis are standard. The series comprises ten models with output ratings from 12 to 54 V, and 12.1 to 54.2 A. Standard features include a power OK signal, PS on and remote sense, along with an auxiliary

output of 5 V at 0.5 A, and a fan supply output of 12 V at 0.6 A. A safety cover is offered as an optional extra, and screw terminals or pluggable header variants are also available. The PQU650 is ideally suited for industrial and medical applications where there are size constraints and for ‘no fan’ applications where noise and maintenance are critical, and also for use in transient load applications that require the PSU to provide high power for short durations. Other applications include, but are not limited to,

communications, test equipment, visual signage, broadcast, ATE, stage lighting, PoE and datacoms.
