Advertorials Gecko SL - assured connection for

vibration-affected designs Presenting engineers with compact, ultra- lightweight connector technology, the Gecko Screw-Lok (SL) series extends Harwin’s Gecko 1.25mm pitch portfolio – addressing applications where there are high degrees of vibrational force (up to 20g/2000Hz) involved.

These award-winning, low-profile components incorporate ruggedised, captive screws with hex heads to ensure that dependable operation is maintained even in the most challenging of environments. Consequently, they are highly optimised for mission critical systems where failure needs to be avoided at all costs – as it

could lead to unwanted system downtime or even put lives in danger. Key areas where they are being implemented include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), race cars and satellites/nanosatellites.

As well as enabling increased security compared to the original latched Gecko versions, these units also prevent slipping during the assembly process. Their innovative ‘mate before lock’ mechanism facilitates fast assembly and increased usability, with additional strain relief being supplied via the board mount fixings.

Omron multi-function Environmental Sensor for the IoT

Omron has announced a USB version of its multi-function Environmental Sensor that quickly allows designers to monitor seven parameters.

Like the previously available Omron 2JCIE- BL01 Sensor, the new 2JCIE-BU01 offers multiple sensors in one unit that has built-in memory and connectivity through beacon communication.

Omron’s Environmental Sensor is available for the first time as a USB unit measuring just

14.9 x 29.1 x 7.0mm and can monitor temperature, humidity, light, UV, barometric pressure, noise, seismic and air quality (VOC gas). The sensor can accumulate data for approx. 3 months (based on a communication frequency of once every 5 mins) and connect to multiple devices, such as smartphones, via Bluetooth 5.0. Despite their compact size, the 2JCIE sensors feature their own embedded memory for data logging to keep track of the surroundings.

Potential applications include monitoring and controlling both industrial and office environments to improve the work space.

Online double conversion UPS Series from Powersolve

provides up to 3000VA • High efficiency full bridge converter design

• 2U x 19in rack mount unit including batteries

Powersolve announces the PGR Series of online double conversion AC-AC uninterruptible power supplies designed to efficiently provide up to 3000VA. The units can work from a very wide AC input range (with PFC) and models are available in 230VAC or 115VAC versions. There are two power ratings of 1500VA or 3000VA. Output is true sine wave. Both models

TFT LCD with HDMI input

Independent distributor Craft Data’s family of embedded TFT LCD is further enhanced by the introduction or Powertip’s range of TFT LCD’s with a HDMI input. With HDMI fast becoming the most popular video interface we can now offer 4.3”(480x272), 5.0”(800x480), 7.0”(800x480 & 1024x600) and 10.1”(1280x800) TFT LCDs that will connect directly to this input source.

There several options on each size including high brightness (1000cd/m²) and Projected Capacitive Touch versions. The HDMI board includes the LED backlight driver plus the V-COM circuitry so all that is needed to be quickly up and running is a 12VDC supply and your HDMI source.

With the popularity of the Raspberry PI SBC within the OEM market, our HDMI TFT LCD offer a quick and easy connection to these very versatile single board computers even to the point of matching the mounting holes so both the SBC and TFT LCD can be stacked and easily integrated into your application.

New heatsinks for BGA For thermal dissipation of electronic devices or

integrated circuitry in the casing design BGA (Ball Grid Array) Fischer Elektronik extends the wide range of products by additional heatsink solutions. As a specialty the casing design BGA has connections on the lower surface of the device for the formerly advised integrated circuitry for example. Those connections in the form of solder balls are applied side by side in a x/y pattern and will be fused during the reflow-soldering. Hereby an optimal connection between device and contact pad is given on the PCB. To avoid damaging this connection by mechanical stress the ICK BGA heatsinks from Fischer Elektronik are reduced in weight and adjusted specially to the geometrical dimension of the BGA devices.

The product expansion contains the dimensions 11x11, 15x15, 19x19, 25x25, 29x29 and 33x33mm. Additionally you can select between the fin height of the heatsink from 6, 10 and 14mm. All designs include a so-called omnidirectional fin structure whereby individual pin fins can result on the top side of the heatsink. The shape of the pin fins allows a good heat dissipation at free convection, but especially at circulating air whereas the airflow is also supported by the heatsink geometry. The single variants show a very good flatness with which a mounting of the BGA device can be done by means of thermal conductive glue or special double-sided adhesive foils which are specially cut to the seize of the device. In addition to the standard programme of the ICK BGA heatsinks the surfaces, mechanical work and special designs can be realised according to customer specifications.

www.fischerelektronik.de HBM leads the way in Hartpury College research project

When Hartpury College and University Centre recently undertook a study to investigate canine gait analysis and force exerted on a lead in a collar and harness, HBM – a market leader in the field of test and measurement - was on hand to supply the necessary electronic strain gauges and software.

Considering the vast range of roles that dogs fulfil, it is important for dog owners to utilise the array of equipment available to help with these roles, such as collars and harnesses, both from a practical point of view and as part of a legal requirement.

The restraints, as required by law, provide the dog with the ability to move freely without pain whilst giving the handler control over it. However, it does not account for any unseen or unaccounted for force that the animal might be facing.

As part of its research to identify whether there is a significant difference in the gait of a dog when it is exercised using either a collar or a harness, and to analyse the degree of force exerted on the lead by the handler and the dog, Hartpury College specified the U9C strain gauge series from

feature an LCD display which allows all operating conditions to be monitored.

Based on a high efficiency, full bridge converter design, the PGR Series is AC generator compatible, features an adjustable float charging voltage and smart battery management. Other key features include auto restart of loads after UPS shutdown and a smart, low noise cooling fan design.

Communications and management are via UPSilon compatible RS232 + USB ports as well as an optional RJ45, DB9 and SNMP card. There is also the availability of an optional remote power-off facility.

The units are housed in a 2U x 19in rack mount unit which includes batteries. The 1500VA unit has a depth of 43cm while the larger 3000VA unit, 51cm. The weights are 16Kg and 25Kg respectively. The PGR Series is also available as a tower unit, which is the PGT Series.

HBM to collect data on the amount of force experienced at the site of the dogs restraint.

The compact and cost-effective U9C series reliably measures tensile and compressive force where space is a constraint. Enabling dynamic and static measurement tasks to be solved, its high fundamental frequency also makes it suitable for very fast measurements. Manufactured in stainless steel and featuring a welded design, the U9C is a robust sensor for challenging applications.

By incorporating strain gauges onto the dogs harness and lead, Hartpury College were successfully able to achieve the desired measurements for both the dog and the handler. To make the design more robust, the transducer was sewn into a one meter lined fleece which enabled the gauge to be fixed to the D ring of the collar or harness. This gauge was then connected to a four port express DAQ which was connected via USB to a laptop.

With the strain gauge and lead attached to the collar, the handlers walked and trotted dogs, and the process was then repeated with dogs wearing a harness instead
