Great opportunities with smart digital signage systems

By Kevin Schmidt, product manager - signage division at DATA MODUL D

igital signage applications have effectively changed the advertising and information industry and can now be found everywhere. We encounter them every day, both indoors and outdoors, for example on the street, in restaurants, at the airport, in doctors’ offices and supermarkets or even at event venues. The technology used in digital signage systems has developed enormously thanks to state-of-the-art electronic platforms. As a pioneering digital communication mode that transports visual content into different worlds of experience in a dynamic and target group-oriented manner, the applications are more versatile, durable and sustainable than ever.

With new, extremely innovative digital signage systems and technologies, the market for digital information in the public continues to grow strongly. It is not only the great variety of design and presentation options that make digital signage so interesting, but the impressive advantages digital signage offers with its flexibility and the cost-effective overall package compared to analogue billposting or classic advertising. A few clicks and the appropriate content management software is all it takes to exchange or program content according to individual requirements, enabling the content to be changed every second or displayed at certain times of the day or night, for example. In addition, facial recognition technologies can help to optimise the specific addressing of target groups. All with the aim of generating maximum attention and reach for the displayed content.

Requirements-based design concepts

Today, interactive elements are also part of the service portfolio of digital signage applications. Self-checkout kiosk systems or information terminals, where visitors can obtain information according to their own interests and needs by means of voice

or gesture control, can be easily realised through intelligent product design and the selection of the right software and housing as well as hardware components. Depending on customer and ambient requirements, different system solutions and design concepts are needed. For example, systems that are exposed to strong sunlight, such as shop windows, often use high-brightness technologies that ensure optimal readability through high brightness and contrast values. For outdoor applications, there are also other important requirements such as heat or cold resistance and protection against dirt and water. In addition, sustainability factors such as durability, long-term availability, reliability and low power consumption continue to gain further prominence. After all, the topic of environmental protection also plays a major role in the digital signage sector and is continuously being promoted by manufacturers.

Smart and highly efficient solutions As a display expert, DATA MODUL has many years of experience in the field of digital signage and helps customers to turn their individual requirement profiles into reality. In addition to a consistent long-term availability of its digital signage products, they can also be used for drop-in replacements, which means that no existing substructures such as mounts have to be replaced and that currently used software such as the media player can continue to be used.

An example of such a drop-in replacement product is the 55-inch UHD2 screen from DATA MODUL. Thanks to its UHD resolution and high brightness of 700cd/m², the display, on the one hand, offers good readability of content even in bright environments and direct sunlight. On the other hand, DATA MODUL’s own eMotion UHD2 scaler card enables the use of a wide range of additional features and simple integration into existing digital signage systems.

Additional features provide added value

As a result, users can avoid the cost- intensive restructuring and adaptation of their systems and at the same time benefit from additional features such as an intelligent ambient light sensor (ALC / Ambient Light Control), Backlight-Life- Time-Expansion, Display Performance Monitoring (DPM) and Pixel Shifting (PXS). The ALC sensor, for example, automatically adjusts the screen brightness to the ambient brightness, thus not only contributing to an optimal user experience, but also to a reduction in power consumption. This reduces energy costs and at the same time extends the life of the device. The Life Time Expansion feature, in turn, monitors the temperatures inside the monitor to ensure that the brightness of the TFT backlight is reduced if a defined threshold is permanently exceeded. This way, the internal temperature of the device can be reduced and its service life extended. In addition, another feature, the so-called Display Performance Monitoring (DPM), makes it possible to continuously monitor the function of the TFT component. The integrated DPM in particular ensures increased efficiency: in the

event of a malfunction, the monitor will first attempt to rectify the fault by restarting on its own accord. If this is not successful, the device can automatically send a corresponding error message to a predefined address, so that maintenance personnel are directly informed about the occurrence of a malfunction. Time- consuming and costly routine checks by maintenance staff are therefore no longer necessary. Pixel Shifting (PXS) is another feature that helps to maintain the display’s high image quality. By cyclically shifting the displayed content by a few pixels, PXS prevents burn-in, especially of static image content. These additional features contribute to considerable cost reductions as well as to a long service life of the display.

Providers and digital signage experts such as DATA MODUL use their many years of experience and the latest additional features to realise individual digital signage solutions for a wide range of requirement profiles - regardless of whether the target is to modernise existing systems or create a completely new digital signage system infrastructure.
