Advertorials Omron releases world’s smallest seismic sensor
Omron Electronic Components Europe today announced the availability of what it believes is the world’s smallest class size seismic sensor, specifically designed to trigger the shutdown of potentially hazardous or easily damaged systems in the event of an earthquake.
Specifically designed for the growing number of autonomous IoT systems, the Omron D7S provides high precision measurement of spectral intensity, allowing it to reject impulse vibration noise and only respond to genuine seismic activity. Despite its compact size, D7S features its own internal memory and I2C interface, allowing it to be readily integrated into IoT devices. Potential applications include smart electricity and gas meters, wireless sensors, industrial control panels, electricity distribution panels, fire-prevention systems, home appliances such as heaters and gas stoves, chemical plants, expressways, bridges, tunnels, roads and many more.
Commenting, Fabrizio Petris, Senior Business Development Manager of Omron Electronic Components Europe said, “Earthquakes are extremely common around the world. On average, 50 earthquakes strike each day, or about 20,000 a year. Many are weak enough to go unnoticed but some are catastrophic. We can’t always predict when a catastrophe will strike. Using the new sensor from Omron, designers can make systems safer and minimise the risk of secondary damage after earthquakes by safely shutting off and stopping hazardous devices. The sensor can also help determine damage by mapping seismic intensity and providing building collapse information.”

Company qualified as supplier to the aerospace industry
AS9100C CERTIFICATION FOR GOUDSMIT MAGNETICS Goudsmit Magnetic Supplies has recently been awarded AS9100C certification and is therefore qualified as a supplier to the aerospace industry. The certification includes all the requirements of ISO9001 plus a great many specific requirements that are mandatory when subcontracting for the aerospace industry. The company attained ISO/TS 16949:2009 certification in 2008 and since that time has been a successful supplier to the automotive industry. Achieving AS9100C certification is the next step in the company’s development as a supplier of magnets and high-quality magnetic systems. Goudsmit supplies the automotive and aerospace industries with permanent magnets and magnetic systems that are used for applications in
sensors, actuators and linear drives. Magnets are also indispensable in the medical, greentech and oil & gas industries. The company is particularly strong in the areas of magnetic measurements, quality control and product development.
NAG
Goudsmit also recently joined NAG, the trade association for the Dutch aerospace and airport development sector. Members are supported through the development of expertise, advocacy, access to the national and international markets, and an extensive network. NAG members are active in aircraft maintenance, aircraft manufacturing, airport development & infrastructure and all related services. NAG’s mission is: continuous optimization of the ability of the Dutch aerospace industry to compete internationally. For more information:

Tiny 8STA connector and accessory package
An ultra-miniature 8STA circular connector series and a comprehensive package of ultra-lightweight 8STA compatible accessories has been announced by Lane Motorsport. The new Souriau size 01 8STA connector is said to offer a significant 20 percent saving in size and weight over the popular size 02 series while maintaining all the size 02 performance advantages – including the anti-vibration design and the high resistance to motorsport fluids.
According to Lane Motorsport, these size 01 connectors accommodate three removable #26 contacts that can handle wires from 24 to 30 AWG. Other key features of these tiny connectors include seven colour-coded orientations, PCB options and a boot termination feature. For even more weight
saving, Lane Motorsport has also made available a single flange version.
Lane Motorsport’s size 01 8STA interconnection package features a comprehensive range of accessories made by HellermannTyton and Weald Electronics. These include protective caps, gaskets, nut plates, heat shrink boots as well as all the assembly tools needed to complete the application.
For example, Weald Electronics’ aluminium protective caps are ultra-lightweight, feature an anti-vibration locking design and the new size 01 caps are about 50 percent lighter than the standard size 02. They are available in 14 sizes and two versions for plugs and receptacles. The caps can be supplied with or without a flexible, stainless steel micro wire rope lanyard.
HellermannTyton’s size 01 heat shrink boots are exclusively available from Lane Motorsport. Available in straight and 90 versions, these heat shrinkable, strain relieving boots for backshell to cable transitions are adhesive lined and made from fuel-proof material.
According to the company, this motorsport interconnection package is available to specify and purchase online at

Low-cost AC inrush current limiter
Powersolve's ESB-101 is a low-cost peak inrush current limiter designed for capacitive loads in a variety of applications across automation systems and machinery. The ESB-101 is available in either 115VAC or 230VAC versions and limits power-up currents and provides continuous operation up to 16A.
According to Powersolve’s Managing Director Peter Clark, it is designed to provide high reliability and maintenance-free operation. “Very nasty conditions can occur on AC lines in the event of a break in the supply” Says Peter Clark. “When power returns, high current peaks can often cause havoc and will trip circuit breakers. In decentralised areas, this will often lead to increased maintenance costs as the breakers require re-setting. This current limiter prevents this happening.” He adds.
Not to be confused with a simple NTC (thermistor) solution, the ESB-101 is a true current limiter and cuts off all peak currents when starting loads under practically every AC condition. It is fitted with an internal temperature fuse to prevent overheating should the bypass circuit fail.
The ESB- 101 has an inrush limiting time as low as 300ms, a capacitance range of 1500µF to 4000µF and an operating temperature range of -40 to +70ºC, it can be wall or DIN Rail mounted, accepts 26 to 10 AWG wire with screw terminals and is housed in an IP20 rated housing.
The limiter is designed to be integrated into capacitive loads such as AC-DC power supplies running in parallel operation. When started, these can cause peak currents in the region of several hundred amps which will trip breakers or disrupt network installations. The ESB-101 is a cost-effective way to prevent this. Many other models available with higher current ratings.

powersolve.co.uk Which temperature sensor fits best?
Where do engineers look for thermistors when designing in sensors either in new or existing products?
ATC Semitec have recently launched a sample case which features their most popular NTC Thermistors. Visual and tactile – engineers can quickly identify the best mechanical fit before considering temperature ranges, accuracy level, speed of response etc.
Initially developed to help heating engineers make the best choice of thermistor in
response to the Eco Design Directive (2009/125/EC) and Energy Labelling Regulations (811/2013), it has been found to be helpful with product specification in a number of other industries.
These NTC thermistors form part of a larger range of thermal components which are supplied to the UK manufacturing industry. ATC Semitec with 20 years’ experience in the thermal controls industry will work with you to design the most suitable temperature sensor, creating bespoke solutions when required.
