Interconnection
Motorsport connectors get smaller and lighter yet still offer
high performance
Like their aerospace and military counterparts, motorsport connectors have to operate across an incredibly wide range of environmental conditions. Extremes of temperature, constant vibration and the presence of a wide variety of liquids come together to provide a stern test of the connector whose integrity and reliability are paramount
A
ccording to Simon Hammerton at Lane Motorsport, in addition to these environmental demands, designers of motorsport platforms are increasingly
requesting more complex harnesses fitted with connectors that are smaller and lighter and which can offer yet more connections as well as the ability to handle higher currents and faster signal and data speeds.
As everybody knows, the motorsport industry can also be very demanding when it comes to component lead
According to Lane Motorsport, these size 01 connectors accommodate three removable #26 contacts that can handle wires from 24 to 30 AWG. Other key features of these tiny connectors include seven colour-coded orientations, PCB options and a boot termination feature. Featuring a rugged aluminium body plated with conductive black Zinc as standard, these 8STA connectors incorporate a positive locking mechanism with locked colour indicators. For even more weight saving, Lane Motorsport has also made available a single flange version. This has a single hole fixing and, according to Lane Motorsport, the new connector will save space in many applications enabling users to optimise their electrical architecture for box mounting for example. Another motorsport product designed to save installation time is a tiny nut plate making installation easier. Lane Motorsport’s size 01 8STA interconnection package features a comprehensive range of accessories made by HellermannTyton and Weald Electronics. These include protective caps, gaskets, nut plates, heat shrink boots as well as all the assembly tools needed to complete the application. For example, Weald Electronics’ aluminium protective
caps are ultra-lightweight, feature an anti-vibration locking design and the new size 01 caps are about 50 per cent
times and suppliers need to be able to respond almost by return to requests for product no matter how small the quantity or how “unusual” the specification. As a result, anyone who wants to supply connectors to motorsport must have at their disposal a limitless stock of the multitude of parts needed to build the connector as well as the facilities to assemble the finished product on demand. Lane Motorsport is a leading assembling, value added distributor for Souriau, a major manufacturer of interconnection products for the motorsport sector.
In the past few months, developments within the electronics connector industry have given motorsport the smallest 8STA circular connector series and a comprehensive package of ultra- lightweight 8STA compatible accessories. These new product developments will find wide application connecting engine control units, communications equipment, data acquisition systems, fuel pumps, starters, alternators and batteries throughout all levels of motorsport. This comprehensive motorsport interconnection package is available to specify and purchase online at
www.lanemotorsport.com. The new ultra-miniature size 01 Souriau 8STA circular connector series offers a significant 20 per cent saving in size and weight over the popular size 02 series while maintaining all the size 02 performance advantages – including the anti-vibration design and the high resistance to motorsport fluids.

lighter than the standard size 02. They are available in 14 sizes and two versions for plugs and receptacles. The caps can be supplied with or without a flexible, stainless steel micro wire rope lanyard. HellermannTyton’s size 01 heat shrink boots are exclusively available from Lane Motorsport. Available in straight and 90 versions, these heat shrinkable, strain relieving boots for backshell to cable transitions are adhesive lined and made from fuel-proof material.
