A recommended implementation pathway includes:
Secure executive commitment and governance – Obtain top-leadership buy-in, appoint a governance champion to set the tone that trustworthy AI is a strategic priority.
Defi ne the scope and map the AI ecosystem – Clearly identify which AI systems and organisational units are in scope and map all technical, ethical and regulatory factors.
Perform both AI risk and impact assessments – Covering security, bias, transparency, privacy and stakeholder concerns, along with societal and ethical risks and impacts.
Design controls and integrate them into the AI lifecycle – Embed governance checks across the entire AI lifecycle, aligning with any existing management frameworks.
Engage and train stakeholders – Provide training and communication to all relevant staff and partners to build a culture of responsible AI.
Implement monitoring and validation mechanisms – AI systems learn and adapt thus need to be continuously performance monitored, and alerts, audits and incident response processes in place.
Audit, review and iterate – Run internal audits, pursue relevant certifi cations and
maintain continuous improvement through regular executive reviews.

Following the pathway, organisations create a virtuous cycle - leadership and stakeholders defi ne trust goals; those goals translate into processes and controls; the controls are executed by teams; outcomes are monitored and fed back into improvements. However, ISO/IEC 42001 adoption does not need to happen all at once, as a phased approach can yield quick wins and lessons that inform a broader rollout.
