What’s the story behind the brand? This year is Start-rite’s 225th Anniversary. In 1792 James Smith a cordwainer was based in a small shop behind Norwich market. He was the first shoemaker in the country to offer an alternative to bespoke footwear. He made and sold ready-made, off-the-peg footwear to a wider audience. We specialise in children’s footwear and today retail through a network of over 400 independent and multiple retailers across the UK and internationally. Our head office is still based in Norwich. We are proud of our heritage, but also understand the modern market and the desire for change. As children develop, so do we!
Is there a brand philosophy? We pride ourselves on creating stylish, quality, durable footwear for children, from their first steps through to active schooldays. Children’s healthy development is at the heart of
everything we do. We know footwear design influences how the child’s whole body develops, so it's important for us as a brand to look further than footwear when it comes to caring for children's feet.
What sets your brand apart from the rest? Health, design and innovation are at the forefront of everything we do, and we are renowned and trusted by generations of parents. We ensure we cater for all tastes in our collections, from modern contemporary styling, through to tough shoes that have the strength and flexibility to keep up with active feet. We also strive to introduce and incorporate unique features into our designs to ensure our ranges offer consumers value for money.
Where is the brand assembled/manufactured? We work closely with our manufacturing partners in India and China.
How is the brand marketed? We have seasonal campaigns, which are supported by our retailers. Social media also plays an important part in reaching an audience who may not have heard of us and it’s a great way of instantly engaging with our customers. It’s important for us to have a presence across all social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest as customers are heavily influenced by what they see and it helps to drive sales.
Any famous customers? Yes, we often see our shoes on famous little feet, and it is always lovely to see. Famous customers have included the Beckhams, Tom Cruise, Adele and Jamie Dornan. We were delighted to see Prince George in our footwear on several formal Royal occasions too. He is the third generation of the Royal Family to wear Start-rite shoes.
