ABB COLUMN DELIVERING THE FUTURE WITH ROBOTS

In recent years, the global logistics industry has changed significantly. With the rise of e-commerce and mass customisation, as well as the ever-growing demands from customers for quick delivery times, logistics companies require optimised solutions to

meet safety and efficiency requirements. A report by management consultancy firm, McKinsey highlighted that almost 25 per cent of customers will pay a premium price for an instant same day delivery service, a figure that can only be expected to rise. So how can distribution centres cope with these high demands? On 23-27 September, ABB will be at IMHX in

Birmingham, stand 19J60, showing companies how our automated solutions, including robots, can help to ensure that goods are handled with speed, flexibility and efficiency. Examples and demonstrations from the ABB digital portfolio and its intralogistics solutions will be present, as well as experts, who will be on hand to explain how our latest technologies can be used to handle a wide variety of parcel sizes, distribution requirements and changing customer demands. The ABB Singulator Cell, OmniCore controller and

Teach Pendant will be showcased alongside built-in standard features, including ABB Ability, Connected Services and SafeMove2. By helping to control the speed and movement of robots within prescribed safety zones, SafeMove2 makes it possible for people to work safely alongside ABB robots with payloads ranging from 6kg to 800kg. As a way of increasing the scope for human/robot collaboration, SafeMove2 enables distribution centers to efficiently manage shifting demands such as low volume/high mix products whilst maintaining high productivity. There’s no doubt that adding robotic automation

could transform performance. For example, the ABB Singulator Cell, which incorporates an ABB IRB 1600 robot, can deliver high speed sortation with high accuracy, separating small parcels from bulk flow as well as auto induction of parcels to sorter systems. The possibilities for the future of e-commerce are

continually expanding, but one thing is for certain, by introducing robotic automation solutions, distribution centers can achieve greater productivity and reliability so that orders are delivered to the right place in quicker turnaround times than ever before. If you’re at IMHX, make sure to come and say hello and see how robots could help transform the future of logistics.
