producers. A breakthrough innovation achieved in the AutoCoding 4Sight software, operating on SICK’s Inspector P smart vision camera, enables direct closed-loop communication of the printed message from any brand of printer using standard inkjet, laser or thermal transfer technologies.


The application, one of the first to be


developed using SICK’s AppSpace software platform, has delivered an error-proof, high- speed inspection system for printed codes such as dates, batch and line numbers. The new direct communication concept cuts out costly ‘nuisance stops’ and the time- consuming set-up that conventional vision systems need to be taught thousands of images and fonts, as well as the context of the surrounding packaging design affecting the inspection. Powered by SICK AppSpace, onboard the


high-resolution SICK Inspector P smart camera with no need for a lineside PC, the 4Sight software simultaneously checks whether the printed code is correct, present and legible. Users have the flexibility to define what is


classed as a ‘good read, bad read or no read’ on a per product basis. However, there’s no need to teach fonts, configure features or regions of interest on the packaging, or for fixturing against an edge or logo. A simple, user-guided self-set up process configures the optimal camera settings.

ouchPath is launching the latest version of its ‘TouchWMS’ warehouse management system, which


includes a number of new features. The TouchWMS power-picking Control Centre, which


delivers proven productivity increases of 50% is now supported by real time graphical KPI screens that display the progress and performance of individual pickers against the picks that have been assigned to them: a bar chart shows how many picks have been assigned and how many remain. Other KPI screens show overall picking and put-away progress. A series of sequential tasks can now be assigned to


each individual at the beginning of each shift (for example picking in one zone followed by put-aways in another followed by cycle counting). When a warehouse worker logs onto the system via a handheld, mobile terminal or desktop they are automatically presented with instructions for the tasks that have been assigned to them.

Union Industries Draws the Curtain on Waste Ammonia The installation featured additional lateral tensioning


straps for the curtains, PVC pelmet and a hardwearing ‘ramskin’ flap to the curtain base, which were incorporated into the design to maintain an effective seal around the curtain. This preserved the negative pressure within the bays and minimised the gases escaping into the Bio Hall. The difference was immediately noticeable as


condensation formed within the bays and was visible on the vision panels installed within the curtains, as opposed to it escaping into the adjoining area. This had previously been the case and the cause of the issue for Amey. Alan Hirst, Sales Director at Union Industries, said:


“This was another large-scale installation by our team, and one that was delivered on-time, to budget and provided an effective solution for the customer. No job is too big, small or, in this case, uncomfortable and messy. There was a noticeable difference once the curtains were in place, which has greatly enhanced the day-to-day running of the waste recycling centre.”
