NEWS AN INDUSTRY FESTIVAL ACHIEVING ACCURACY, RELIABILITY AND REPEATABILITY N N
ineteen Group has announced the return of Manufacturing & Engineering Week in June 2023. The week-long festival
combines both live and digital events and celebrates the best that the UK industrial sector has to offer. The centrepieces of the week are four exhibitions - Design & Engineering Expo, Drives & Controls featuring AirTech and Fluid Power and Systems, Smart Factory Expo and Maintec - that take place at Birmingham’s NEC. Peter Jones, CEO of Nineteen Group said: “We
launched the first Manufacturing & Engineering week in 2022 and I referred to our ambition as being about building a Hannover Messe type event. However, in 2023, with the incredible additions we have made, I think Glastonbury is a more relevant reference point. Something uniquely British that celebrates creativity and original thinking both on a large scale on our ‘main stages’, the centrepiece exhibitions, or on smaller stages, or virtually, where cutting-edge technology can be demonstrated, or industry thought leaders can inspire through a series of topical sessions. It’s about bringing like-minded people together to create momentum and throw a spotlight on this vital sector, inspiring them and, more importantly, ensuring that it is a memorable and enjoyable week.” Manufacturing & Engineering Week 2023 will
address the most pressing subjects, as outlined by its advisory council, that includes the likes of Rosa Wilkinson, Director of Policy, High Value Manufacturing Catapult and Stephen Phipson CBE, CEO, Make UK and Manufacturing & Engineering Week Chairman. Because of the broad range of areas covered the event is appropriate for a large-scale audience regardless of seniority. The sheer scale of the event guarantees that there are more than enough relevant activities for everyone. The centrepiece exhibitions take place on 7th
and 8th June 2023. Design & Engineering Expo allows all design engineers and product designers to access the latest technology whilst connecting with and learning from their peers. Maintec will inspire and celebrate the people, technology and tools used in the continual pursuit of uptime. Smart Factory Expo has a wealth of thought leadership content and is built on extensive market research and sector analysis. The Drives & Controls, Fluid Power and Systems and Airtech events will feature as zones in 2023, before returning as stand-alone events in June 2024.

on-invasive, clamp-on ultrasonic flow metering is proving to be a highly accurate measuring tool for
high pressure oxygen in the petrochemical setting. Able to measure gases at temperatures over 100° C, ultrasonic technology uses sound waves to measure the flow of oxygen within the pipe. Alternating between transmitting and receiving pulses of ultrasound waves between two transducers, the flowmeter can accurately determine the flow rate. FLEXIM was tasked with the retrofit of
billing meters for oxygen at the world’s largest oxygen production site in Secunda, South Africa. A recent restructuring had meant that two companies would need to be able to bill each other for products and utilities across a common site, but there was no metering currently in place. The oxygen plant had previously been integrated within the chemical complex and was part of an internal system that previously required no metering. Because of the large volumes traded,
metering accuracy, reliability and repeatability were essential to both parties. A four channel meter was the solution, offering the best possible performance via non-intrusive measurement. The plant was large and complex, with numerous measuring points to be monitored, not least of which were the high temperature oxygen lines and headers, with temperatures ranging from 110 to 120°C. The pipes were over 40 years old, and despite having been insulated were showing their age, with signs of rust
and corrosion on the surface. In order to install a traditional metering
system, a factory shutdown would be needed. This simply wasn’t a feasible option, so, to avoid this situation, it was agreed that a benchmarking test would be carried out to compare ultrasonic technology to a wetted multi-path custody transfer flowmeter installed on an Air Separation Unit. The tests were successfully undertaken and the commissioning was executed with no interruption whatsoever to the normal plant operations. The quad beam meter was permanently
installed, in parallel with a custody system. Chosen for its adaptability to both high and low temperature oxygen measurement, the quad beam meter offers the benefit of increased accuracy thanks to the averaging of multiple sound paths, even where there are less than ideal inlet conditions. And because of the inbuilt flow computer, complexity and cost are reduced, with simultaneous reporting of both flow and diagnostic data achieved via the Modbus protocol.

TURCK BANNER LAUNCHES SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVE F
or many years Turck Banner has been working with customers to improve efficiency in areas ranging from
saving energy by using LED lighting, through to identifying areas for improvement with OEE Kits. Although not on an “Eco Crusade”, the company recognises the part it plays in supporting the environment. Throughout its lifetime, Turck Banner has
supported many charities, and for 2023 has started an initiative to plant trees. While there are many great charities and organisations set up to plant trees all across the world, the company has
chosen to partner with Trees for Life, a charity established 25 years ago, dedicated to rewilding the Scottish Highlands. The target is to plant a
grove of 2023 trees in 2023. Turck Banner will plant at least one tree for every

project with which it is involved, if it fits the sustainability category. Because the customer base includes everyone from the corner shop to huge multinationals, no fixed monetary criterion has been set. Instead the intention is to plant a tree for all of them, regardless of the size of the project. Should the target be exceeded, all
further donations will be used in supporting Trees for Life’s other projects. The grove can be seen at
