LIGHT AT THE END OF THE TUNNEL - EUROPE AND ITS ROLE IN THE CORONAVIRUS CRISIS

E

uropean manufacturers hold the key to alleviating worldwide shortages in LED and other lighting components, as Chinese factories halt production in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, according to distributor, Prime Light. As highlighted on the previous page, businesses are asked to be aware of the risk of a critical component shortage, as a result of the disruption of quarantine in China: production cuts, product launch delays and forced factory closures will manifestly impact those that rely on imported products around the world. In fact, as of last week, two-thirds of the Chinese economy remained closed; Chinese vendors have already increased component prices by two to three per cent, with fears that this could rise further unless the situation improves. Although many factories are expected to reopen shortly, delays in

the design and prototyping processes could cascade well into the coming months. Commenting on the supply challenges, Russell Parr, sales and marketing director at Prime Light, said: “There is a concerted effort amongst European based suppliers to mitigate any component shortages from China and the surrounding regions. European based lighting manufacturers and suppliers will be central to alleviating any potential impact across the industry.”

“By working with European suppliers, Prime Light is confident that the likelihood of any supply shortages, or indeed international trade issues, are avoided as almost all components supplied are manufactured in the United Kingdom and Europe.”

ADVANTECH ACTS I

n response to the current outbreak of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), Advantech will start posting regular updates on work resumption and production availability at the Advantech Kunshan Manufacturing Center (AKMC), as well as updates on operations in locations throughout Mainland China. Infection status of employees around the globe will also be posted on the official website from February 12. These updates will provide global partners, customers, and employees with all the latest data regarding Advantech’s global operations and actions in response to COVID-19.

So far, Advantech’s locations in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou have been allowed to resume operations. However, in order to guarantee employee safety, some employees will work from home from February 10 to 14. In the mean time, Advantech’s

manufacturing centres in Taiwan and Japan are operating as usual. Advantech expects to partially resume production in Kunshan, starting from February and gradually returning to normal in March. At the same time, those centers in Taiwan will increase capacity in response to short-term production gaps, in order to reduce the overall impact to Advantech’s global operations.
