ELECTRONICA 2018 POST SHOW REVIEW

ELECTRONICA 2018 – CONNECTING EVERYTHING — SMART, SAFE AND SECURE

More than 3,100 exhibitors from over 50 countries provided an insight into the electronics of the future with their solutions and products. Focal topics of the show included an insight into the latest in artificial intelligence and medical electronics. Here’s more of the show’s highlights

E

lectronica 2018 trade fair lived up to its mantra of “connecting everything

— smart, safe and secure”. The new format “electronica Experience” focused on networking between exhibitors, school pupils, students and trade visitors. On all four days of the trade fair, applications, live demos and a jobs fair provided an insight into the world of electronics and its professions. The highlight was its opening by the U.S. economist Jeremy Rifkin on the first day of the fair. In his talk, he voiced clear demands relating to the use of artificial intelligence: “We need to understand what we can use AI for and what not. Big data plays a major role in communication, energy and transportation.”

PREMIERE OF THE MEDICAL ELECTRONICS CONFERENCE Medicine meets electronics: Physicians and electronics engineers discussed for the first time the future of medicine at the electronica Medical Electronics Conference (eMEC), which was devoted to the topic of medical electronics and networking of electronics engineers and physicians. The topic of the discussion was “The Connected Human: Healthier thanks to electronics and data?” Oliver Hayden, head of the department for medical electronics at the Technical University of Munich in Germany, draws a positive verdict: “The eMEC format with several stages in the direct vicinity was refreshing and an elegant means of giving participants the chance to learn, meet and talk. I’m looking forward to the next Medical Electronic Conference.” The electronica Automotive Conference (eAC), the electronica Embedded Platforms Conference (eEPC), the Wireless Congress and 16 more forums rounded off electronica’s extensive supporting program.

SEMICON EUROPA FOR THE FIRST TIME AT ELECTRONICA More than 300 exhibitors from Semicon Europa showcased their solutions and products from the field of semiconductor production. Ajit Manocha, CEO and President of the industry association SEMI, stated: “Our exhibitors are very pleased with the new collaboration between Semicon Europa and electronica - it’s a real benefit for the entire value chain of the electronics industry.” Next year Semicon Europa will be held as part of productronica.

brushless DC (BLDC) motor drive applications to 300W. The company advises features such as its superior efficiency along with the distributed thermal footprint provided by the IHB driver eliminates the need for a heatsink, reducing both system cost and weight. Integrated lossless current sensing, bus

voltage sensing and system-level thermal sensing makes this device family ideal for BLDC motors in home-appliance applications. BridgeSwitch devices target refrigerator compressors, HVAC system fans and other residential and light commercial pumps, fans and blowers. FTDI Chip introduced its advanced

Technology innovations were in no short supply as many companies took the opportunity to launch their latest solutions or showcase their cutting edge products at Electronica 2018. Leading manufacturer of high-performance interconnect solutions, Nicomatic launched its new, rugged micro connector, a 1.27mm pitch EMM series, which targets defence and other high- reliability applications. Designed to meet the performance requirements of MIL 83513, this series of connectors occupy some 40% less space than previous- generation connectors from the company, are 20% smaller than Micro D connectors for 16-pin configurations and are claimed to be around 10 percent smaller in footprint than other similar products. Power Integrations demonstrated its

BridgeSwitch integrated half-bridge (IHB) motor driver IC family. These ICs feature high- and low-side advanced FREDFETs (Fast Recovery Diode Field Effect Transistors) with integrated lossless current sensing, resulting in inverter conversion efficiency of up to 98.5% in

bridge IC with USB Type-C connectivity and USB power delivery (PD) Rev. 3.0 controller capabilities - supporting applications up to 100W. Through use of the FT4233H, it will be possible for currents reaching 3A to be provided to connected hardware (power tools, lights, household appliances, etc.). All the negotiation and power gauging activities are taken care of directly, via the IC’s integrated 32-bit PD Policy Engine and USB Protocol Engine elements (with no USB specific firmware programming being required). This means the system microcontroller does not have to get involved in such functions and system performance. Among many other innovations,

Omnetics Connector Corporation demonstrated its new Micro 360 Cat6a connectors. Using both simulation and measurement, the company says it optimised the performance for Cat6a with a novel 5-pin grounding strategy to these Micro 360 Cat6a connectors.
