A SECURE GATEWAY TO REMOTE MACHINE ACCESS

sustainability & energy savings, security & data integrity, and 24/7 remote access to equipment. In line with this, both machine builders and plant operators want the ability to troubleshoot their machines remotely; while machine users want to maximise machine uptime and overall equipment efficiency. All, however, want to improve sustainability and profitability – efficiently, securely and in a scalable manner. But what are the benefits to remote machine access? • Ability to troubleshoot and monitor machines from anywhere • Enables faster, more efficient, support • Reduce travel costs and increase sustainability • Optimise engineers’ productivity • Maximise machine uptime • Reduce service operation costs and increase user satisfaction

T

• Facilitation teamwork with customers. Industrial remote access makes it possible

for support teams from both machine builders and machine users alike to connect securely to remote PLC-based equipment through the Internet. Remote troubleshooting enhances efficiency, improves sustainability and reduces costs. Despite this, it is still seen as a challenge, with less than 20% of machines currently equipped

here are currently a number of trends driving automation – globalisation and digitalisation, smart manufacturing,

HMS Networks has introduced the Cosy+

industrial remote access gateway from Ewon, which enables safe and secure remote access to machinery. Rachael Morling finds out more

with industrial remote connectivity. This is down to factors such as lack of knowledge, worries about security risks and so on. So, to make machine connectivity

more accessible, HMS Networks has launched Cosy+.

WHAT IS COSY+? The Cosy+ industrial remote access gateway from Ewon builds on the successful Cosy 131. This, HMS Networks explains, incorporates some of the most advanced security technologies in automation devices. Establishing successful industrial

remote access to any equipment relies on two main components: • A global connectivity cloud service • A hardware gateway placed inside the control panel of the equipment.

SICK’S SAFE RADAR SYSTEM UPGRADES FOR BETTER PROTECTION

SICK’s safeRS3 is a next-generation safe 3D radar system designed to enable maximum productivity with highly-reliable safe access protection for workers in hazardous industrial areas, including robot cells. The robust radar detection principle is ideal for heavy industrial or harsh outdoor environments. Incorporating best-in-class safe radar technology, the safeRS3 is an electro-sensitive 3D protective

device for safe personal detection. With a higher measurement accuracy, it protects personnel in stationary applications to PLd or SIL2 in line with ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061. By introducing the safeRS3, SICK has achieved a longer 5m protective field range, with up to a 100˚ opening angle and the ability to set up to four protective fields. A safety-over-networks version has been introduced with PROFINET control for easy integration into a PROFIsafe network. The safeRS3 extends the versatility of safe radar to more industrial applications and, as a

category 3 device, can be used in robotic applications in accordance with ISO 10218-2. With the safeRS3, operators can avoid unnecessary machine downtime while continuing to safeguard

personnel. A safe automatic restart function helps ensure maximum productivity in more complex machine cells. The validation view helps operators to view where field infringements are in real time. Its 60GHz radar detection principle ensures it can filter out particles or contamination in dirty or high-humidity conditions. It is not affected by low or bright light, and performs accurately despite dirt, dust clouds, heavy rain, humidity, etc. Operating between -40˚C to +60˚C, it offers reliable protection in heavy industrial facilities or in outdoor environments. Each safeRS3 radar sensor has a rugged IP67 housing and can be configured with up to six sensors. Because of its technology and 3D cone-shaped coverage, it ideal for hazardous areas with more complex topography. With the PROFINET version, a standard Ethernet connection also enables configuration, diagnostics and Modbus integration. Alternatively, customers can purchase an economical control with local I/O and two pairs of OSSDS for configuration and diagnosis via USB-C.

SICK 12 DESIGN SOLUTIONS FEBRUARY 2023 www.sick.co.uk

Through Ethernet, serial or USB interfaces, Ewon’s Cosy+ industrial gateway establishes a secure VPN connection between the machine (such as a PLC, HMI, or other device) and the remote engineer. The connection happens through Talk2M, a highly secure industrial cloud service, which is free of charge, including its desktop, mobile and web clients. To establish a secure outbound VPN connection to Talk2M, Ewon’s industrial cloud service, devices also connect to the Internet via an Ethernet, WiFi or cellular network.

Because the setup requires no

advanced IT knowledge, the Cosy+ may be deployed quickly: it comes with an eCatcher ‘setup wizard’ which will guide the user through a few simple steps to generate a configuration file. This can then be applied automatically to an Ewon gateway via a PC to USB connection or ported via a USB stick or a SD card. Full integration of IT security standards means minimal or zero IT changes are required; and both the Talk2M cloud and Cosy+ gateways are certified to ISO 27001. Ewon also works closely with the independent cybersecurity firm NVISO to ensure its solution is adapting to the evolving security landscape. Authorised users simply log in to their

Talk2M account using eCatcher client software, and remotely connect in a few clicks to any of their automation devices for monitoring or maintenance purposes. The Talk2M service acts as a secure platform, which completes the encrypted VPN tunnel between the user and the remote equipment. HMS has developed the Ewon range in

compliance with the ISO 27001 standard. ISO/IEC 27001 is one of the best-known standards in the IT sector, and includes requirements for an information security management system (ISMS).
