WORLD RECORD SOLO FLIGHT PILOT AIMS TO INSPIRE GIRLS AND WOMEN INTO STEM AND REDUCE THE GENDER GAP IN AVIATION

As one of her sponsors, Eurobond Adhesives was proud to see Zara Rutherford complete her epic 155-day solo flight around the world which resulted in her entering the Guinness Book of World Records. With her flight, Rutherford’s aim was to encourage and inspire girls and young women to pursue their dreams and reduce the gender gap in aviation as well as in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Her flight broke three world records: • At 19yrs old, Rutherford is the youngest female pilot to circumnavigate the globe by aircraft, solo. • Rutherford is the youngest person to circumnavigate solo in a microlight aircraft. • Rutherford is the first Belgian to have circumnavigated the world flying solo. In order for her flight to qualify, Rutherford had to include one pair of antipodals (points diametrically perfectly opposite to each other on the globe). On 3rd September 2021 she visited the first antipodal: Quibdo, Colombia (the wettest city on Earth). On 21st December she visited the second antipodal: Jakarta, Indonesia. Eurobond Adhesives’ managing director, Simon Dearing, commented: “Rutherford is an inspirational

ambassador to all young women. She has achieved her dream, overcoming her fears, enduring extremely hostile and dangerous environments, flying over Californian wild fires, active volcanoes in Iceland, typhoons in Indonesia, and dodging volatile North Korean airspace, and has remained focussed throughout. We hope that other young women will be inspired to challenge themselves and follow careers in technology and science.”

As a company that can design-in bespoke display solutions for OEMs, Itron UK’s technology is helping to detect Covid variants. One customer, KBiosystems, manufactures equipment

used to detect Covid variants, with its sample sealers employing 4.3in and 7in display modules. A typical sample tray consists of 225 compartments which, once loaded, requires a foil heat seal to be applied to prevent contamination. The latest designs use Itron’s modular system solution with stepper motor drive, temperature measurement and heating sub-modules controlled by the

display module operating iDevOS via internal serial CAN and I2C interfaces. The stepper motor module uses a local AVR CPU and watchdog to monitor safety interlocks,

to control the motor, and to enable heating to provide a fail-safe solution. Another customer, Monmouth Scientific, manufactures Clean Air Cabinets which guarantee a

highly clean environment in which to analyse thousands of swabs from Covid Test Centres. Both 4.3in and 7in display modules are used across a range of products to set flow rate, filter change and other parameter settings.

Reeco Automation, a specialist in Collaborative Robot (Cobot) applications, has been appointed Omron’s Autonomous Mobile Robot (AMR) solution partner. The partnership enables the duo to offer time-saving operational efficiencies that address the logistical, warehousing and end-of-line challenges faced by UK manufacturers, distributors and large retailers. Reeco is now the sole UK Mobile Robot solution partner for Omron. To start the partnership, Reeco will receive delivery of the first HD-1500 Mobile Robot in the UK, which is said to feature a payload capacity of up to 1500kg. Newly appointed head of AMR applications, Mick

Deegan, heads up the division. He said: “The ability to easily add to existing AMR configurations through hybrid fleets or additional tasks allows companies to gradually introduce the technology and will give more in-house capability and control, which is essential in ever changing modern manufacturing environments.” Omron’s UK general manager, Sam Tilley, said:

“Developing strong, bi-directional partnerships with world class solution providers is key to helping the UK manufacturing sector thrive in the future.”

Schaeffler has announced a partnership with the New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE), which opened its doors in 2021 to address the UK’s shortage of work-ready graduate engineers. Schaeffler aims to encourage greater diversity in the engineering sector by sponsoring a female NMITE student for the duration of her degree course. The first cohort of 27 students joined NMITE in 2021 to study its three-year accelerated Master’s Degree in Integrated Engineering (MEng). Schaeffler will sponsor a student from the September 2022 intake. The course is designed to mirror a typical workplace, with students attending classes from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday. NMITE aims to attract students who can demonstrate personal resilience, curiosity and passion, as well as academic capability, and its ambition is to attract 200 learner engineers each year. Rachel Carr, NMITE’s marketing and

communication lead, explained: “Traditional engineering programmes don’t best prepare individuals to meet complex challenges. Engineering offers an exciting and varied career path and NMITE’s objective is to provide an integrated education programme that trains students to tackle global challenges that do not fall neatly into traditional mechanical, electrical or materials engineering boxes.”
