industrY news A vISION FOR SUSTAINAbLE URbAN AIR MObILITY

Dassault Systèmes has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vertical Aerospace, a global aerospace and technology company that is pioneering zero emissions aviation, to further collaborate on and execute a shared vision for the future of sustainable urban air mobility. Vertical aims to commence commercial flights of its electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL)

aircraft, the VX4, by 2025. The company will explore leveraging the full power of virtual twin technologies enabled by the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to prepare for flight testing in 2022 and flight certification in 2025. Dassault Systèmes will be supporting this journey in several ways, including enabling model-

based certification. This approach will maximise the use of the virtual twin technologies on the 3DEXPERIENCE platform to synergise virtual and physical testing, while maintaining the high level of governance required by certification authorities. While Vertical is already leveraging Dassault Systèmes’ virtual twin technology to support the design of its aircraft, both companies will now look to support future manufacturing operations by creating virtual twins of industrial systems, enabling a more effective and sustainable way to prepare for production ramp up at scale. “We’re pleased to build on our partnership with Dassault Systèmes by exploring new ways to innovate

across our certification and manufacturing processes,” says Michael Cervenka, president at Vertical Aerospace. “The 3DEXPERIENCE platform will greatly support all phases of the product lifecycle, which is fundamental to our goal of revolutionising the way we travel in a more sustainable world.”

25-hour flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder developed

Curtiss-Wright’s Defence Solutions division has developed a 25-hour flight data recorder (FDR) and cockpit voice recorder (CVR) designed for use on military fixed-wing and rotor aircrafts. The extremely rugged

Fortress FDR-25 and Fortress CVR-25 are designed in accordance with RTCA/DO-178C and RTCA/DO-254 (DAL D) standards and meet or

exceed all current FAA and EUROCAE ED-112A standard requirements. These recorders provide a cost-efficient solution that leverages advanced

technologies developed for compact commercial and military platforms. For many applications, they provide form and fit replacements that require no change to the airframe. According to the company, they are ideal for use on new aircraft, or for upgrading older platforms requiring flight data recorders that satisfy commercial regulatory compliance. “We are proud to lead the industry in bringing extended operation and greater

survivability for flight recorders to the military aircraft market,” said Chris Wiltsey, senior vice president and general manager, Curtiss-Wright Defence Solutions division. “Our Fortress FDR and CVR products build on Curtiss-Wright’s long legacy in the flight recorder market, with new cost-effective, lightweight and compact, modern recorders that meet the latest regulations.”

cp automation opens new division

CP Automation has launched a dedicated crane and power transmission department to complement its growing range of product and engineered solutions. Following last year’s acquisition of Magnetek’s

UK elevator business, the company realised the benefits of also offering a dedicated support service for crane applications. “Every crane or power transmission project is unique, and establishing a dedicated new department was the obvious step forward,” said John Mitchell, CP Automation’s global sales and marketing director. “It shows how we are continuing to expand and adapt as a business, so we can meet the needs an ever-changing industry.”
