Under a new collaboration, 3D printing company Stratasys will provide BAE Systems with increased access to new materials and production technologies currently under development or planned by the company. BAE Systems currently deploys a blend of the company’s PolyJet and FDM-based additive manufacturing technologies, including F900 Production 3D Printers, at its advanced manufacturing facility in Samlesbury, England. Stratasys hopes to benefit from dedicated insight and guidance into specific existing

steering future R&D programmes and the advancement of next-generation additive manufacturing technologies. Dave Holmes, manufacturing director,

and future needs demanded by the major aerospace and defence manufacturer. This, the company believes, will be invaluable for

BAE Systems Air, said: “We’re delighted to bolster our relationship with such an innovative partner as Stratasys. AEROSPACE FLUID SUSCEPTIBILITY TEST SERVICE LAUNCHED

To help aerospace manufacturers determine whether materials used in equipment can tolerate the damaging effects of fluid contaminants, TÜV SÜD has launched a new fluid susceptibility test service. The service will rigorously test aviation

components to ensure they comply with the requirements of aerospace and defence standards. This includes commercial avionics standard RTCA DO-160 (Environmental Conditions and Test Procedures for Airborne Equipment) and the Ministry of Defence’s standard DEF STAN 00-35, which sets out the environmental conditions in which defence material is expected to operate and survive. Contamination tests will cover fluids commonly

used in airborne and ground operations, such as fuels, lubricants and solvents. The tests will also ensure that materials used in commercial aircraft cabins are resistant to everyday fluids such as cleaning liquids and drinks, so that they maintain their integrity and visual appeal. Martin Foley, business line manager for Aerospace

& Defence at TÜV SÜD, said: “Our test methods will closely replicate specific fluid contamination scenarios so that manufacturers fully understand how much damage could be done to their equipment over time, enabling them to mitigate against failures within their product design.” www.tuv-sud.co.uk

SPELSBERG

GUARANTEES FAST ENCLOSURE DELIVERY

W

ith the military,

aerospace & defence sectors being so vital to the UK economy, our industry focus this month takes a look at a number of different areas of interest. As well as examining how braze alloys play their part in space exploration, we take a look at how important it is for suppliers to the UK aerospace industry (which has an annual turnover of over £30bn) to meet exacting quality standards and tight delivery schedules. For these stories and more, turn to our Military, aerospace & defence focus starting on page 10.

When facing poor exchange rates and a lack of certainty about supply from the European mainland, end-users are increasingly concerned about their suppliers’ stock positions. Spelsberg UK’s large warehouse facility, however, is strategically stocked with thousands of enclosure sizes and designs for guaranteed fast delivery. Chris Lloyd, Spelsberg UK

managing director, commented: “Spelsberg is the largest ex stock supplier of non-metallic enclosures in the UK. We have over 8,000sq ft of dedicated warehouse space where we hold close to £1million of stock. This covers thousands of individual sizes and designs, which means we can offer next day delivery for 99% of orders for standard enclosures.” www.spelsberg.co.uk

HARTING Technology Group has opened a state-of-the-art European Distribution Centre (EDC) in Espelkamp. Costing an estimated €45 million, this is the largest single investment in its 74-year history. Here, up to 20,000 order items will be processed every day. Highlights of the EDC include a highly-automated picking system and a storage area, which is optimally managed and efficiently utilised according to the respective order load and capacity. The power for the European

Distribution Centre is supplied by a photovoltaic system installed on the roof, while the energy requirements for cooling and heating are covered by internally produced biomethane and a geothermal plant, for which 36 holes needed to be drilled to a depth of 150m. The implemented energy supply minimises Co2

emissions. The cost of the entire centre

came in 27% lower than the figure originally calculated by the Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW). www.harting.com/UK/en-gb

Gardner Denver has achieved a quality management certification for its automotive production facility in Redditch, UK. The company met the standards

required in its manufacturing and assembly lines for IATF (International Automotive Task Force) 16949: 2016 accreditation. This standard establishes the

requirements for a Quality Management System (QMS), focused on the specific requirements of the automotive sector. It indicates that Gardner Denver works within a QMS that has been implemented based around risk and continuous improvement practices. This includes a focus on preventing defects during production, limiting variation between products, and reducing waste in the supply chain. www.gardnerdenver.com/transport
