Two new sealing concepts for its Generation C bearings have been developed by Schaeffler. The new Z-type dust shield with its labyrinth seal helps to reduce grease loss by 20%, and reduces contamination by 30% compared to the previous design. The patented ELS lip seal (optional) provides maximum sealing at low friction and is particularly suitable for alternating axial loads, such as those found in the wheel bearings of motorcycles. In addition, non-contact BRS lip seals and HRS lip seals, which start at the inner ring, are available with increased sealing performance in the standard range. The high quality of the balls and a noise-


optimised cage enable Generation C bearings to run at significantly reduced noise levels and with lower friction, the company explains. Their benefits mean Generation C bearings


are ideal for use in electric motors. The efficiency of small electric motors with low capacity – the type often found in electrical consumer goods such as washing machines,


dishwashers, fans and power tools – is mostly determined by the power loss of the internal bearings. Generation C bearings not only offer 35% less friction than their predecessor, but also cut noise levels by 50%. This means a more efficient motor, resulting in reduced energy consumption. Motorcycle manufacturers are also


benefitting from Generation C bearings, including in emerging markets such as South East Asia and India, where road conditions and the environment are challenging and the bearings are often exposed to severe contamination and ingress of water.

LINEAR SYSTEM HELPS TO DELIVER A MAINTENANCE- FREE BIRTH SIMULATOR


With 3B Scientific’s SIMone birth simulator, gynaecologists and midwives in training help a plastic foetus to be delivered in different scenarios, each requiring specific procedures. The actual birth process is both recorded and predefined with the aid of a force feedback system so the foetus moves through the birth canal. The integrated force-moment sensor measures the forces and the directions with which the obstetrician brings the baby into the world, and displays on the screen, in real time, these actual values in comparison with the set points regarded as optimal, in addition

In one of the original designs a recirculating ball bearing guide was used but it had to be cleaned regularly because the lubricant needed to simulate the birth process dripped into the unit. as an alternative. These linear axes use a sliding pair of hard-anodised slide rails and liners made of plastic iglidur with incorporated lubricant. For the positioning of the foetus, a drive rod


consisting of an igus lead screw and an anti backlash lead screw nut is used. The worm wheel on the force feedback sensor, which causes the rotation of the foetus and was originally made of brass, was also replaced.
