PRODUCTS FASTENINGS & ADHESIVES BARREL BOLT RANGE

Available from FDB Panel Fittings, the small PINET aluminium barrel bolts are made to slide into a cylindrical socket, providing a simple low-cost security solution with a positively fixed position, but where ready manual access is required. These have a double latch to retain

the bolt in either extended or withdrawn position. Barrel bolts are often used internally to retain one of a pair of double doors which is infrequently used, or they can be installed externally where it is important to maintain door closure but where access security is not an issue.

FAST CURING ADHESIVE FOR USE IN ELECTRONICS

New from Eurobond Adhesives is Vitralit UC1535, a transparent adhesive for use in electronics. This epoxy based UV Curing adhesive can be cured with radiation in the UVA range from 320Nm to 390Nm in just a few seconds.

Easy to dispense with non-shear thinning, the adhesive

was especially designed for the assembly and production of electronic, semi-conductor and opto-mechanical applications – as an example, it is being used to bond glass lenses in optical systems. Once cured, the adhesive features a transparent, optically clear and brilliant surface, which is very hard and scratch resistant. It is also non-yellowing and remains optically clear even when exposed to high temperatures.

A NEW SOLUTION FOR REFLOW SOLDERING

CUSTOMISED FASTENERS

Challenge Europe can provide fastener solutions ranging from machine screws to the more specialised and heavily customised bolt. According to the company, threaded fasteners can readily be adjusted to suit many diverse applications requiring non-standard lengths, intermediate diameters as well as alternatives to the generally available materials of steel, stainless steel, brass, aluminium and nylon. Alternate materials include titanium,

copper, phosphor bronze, duplex and super duplex stainless steels. Threaded fasteners with special heads may be needed such as bar type (T form) to locate in slots, or bolts for special purposes – such as welded to a foot plate or spiked for use in materials processing machinery. A common form of specialist bolt

is the U bolt or hook where the extended bolt can be formed in such a way as to create a completely different item of custom dimensions. Further refinement is then possible with surface treatments.

New from Altus Group is Rehm’s VisionXP+ Vac convection soldering system which offers a flexible 2-in-1 solution for reflow soldering. With its vacuum option, this removes voids while the

solder is still in its optimal molten state. With a vacuum under 100 mbar, void areas of less than 2% can be achieved. Soldering with vacuum is particularly suitable for dissipating heat in demanding assemblies or for assemblies for power electronics. The number of voids are minimised by the vacuum, therefore achieving a better electrical and thermal connection. Integrated pyrolysis and separate filtration of the extracted atmosphere in the vacuum chamber are further advantages for maintaining and cleaning the system.

The adhesives are ceramic-filled

and thus electrically insulating, two- component products which cure at room temperature (or by heat to accelerate this). The variants differ in their thermal conductivity, temperature resistance and mechanical properties. Polytec TC 406 is characterised

in particular by its high thermal conductivity and mechanical strength. Polytec TC 411 is a flexible thermally conductive adhesive that is able to compensate for thermo-mechanical stress and also adheres well to difficult- to-bond plastic surfaces. Polytec TC 422 offers very good adhesion, especially to metallic surfaces, and a high temperature resistance.

ADHESIVE SOLUTIONS SUIT CONTEMPORARY DESIGN

Attracting over 300,000 visitors each year, the summer pavilion at London’s Serpentine Gallery provides a showcase for contemporary architecture, with this year’s pavilion designed by Japanese architect Junya Ishigami of Junya Ishigami + Associates, the youngest recipient of the Architectural Institute of Japan Prize. The pavilion features a flowing slate roof, with its weighty yet slender form arching over a series of 106 narrow steel columns. Stage One, which builds the pavilion every year, contacted Viking

Tapes for a way to hold 62 tons of slate tiles onto a delicate lattice of steel columns so that they would appear to float. Here, the company needed to consider movement of individual tiles in all weather conditions, reduced vibration and therefore lower noise levels, and how the structure could be easily dismantled and then re-built in different locations. Following extensive discussions and testing, all the supporting steel work was given a superior finish

using Klingspor flapdiscs from Viking. The 106 supporting brackets were held in place using Viking E3 two part adhesive, renowned for its holding power and flexibility; and, finally, each roof tile was fixed in place with a Viking MS polymer adhesive which was slate grey in colour. This provided excellent shear resistance but allowed for individual tile movement while providing acoustic dampening. Finally, it could be peeled away easily, allowing the structure to be dismantled.

Three products have been added to Intertronics’ range of thermally conductive adhesives from its partner Polytec PT. To address the inherent challenges when processing two- component materials manually, Polytec PT has developed a range of thermally conductive adhesives that are available in side-by-side cartridges. Both components of the adhesive are already filled in the correct mixing ratio and can be easily dispensed by means of a dispensing gun. Resin and hardener mix automatically in the static mixer.
