FEATURE MOTION CONTROL & LINEAR MOTION

Coping with the hostile insulation product manufacturing environment

When a manufacturer of insulation products needed a linear system for

positioning mould tools from a conveyor into filling stations, it turned to HepcoMotion. The solution, however, needed to be able to cope with the hostile operating environment, which included fine glass fibres that end up covering all surfaces

nsulation materials are full of fine, glass fibres, that create extremely hostile

conditions for linear bearings – impacting on system life and increasing downtime costs. In an atmosphere filled with fine fibres that tend to cover all surfaces, many linear systems would incur costly downtime and need replacing. So, when a large manufacturer of insulation products had the task of positioning mould tools from a 50m long conveyor into various filling stations, the choice of linear systems was limited.

APPLICATION DEMANDS The application demanded a 10m X-axis and a 2.5m Z-axes to transfer the mould tool from the conveyor to the filling machine; and an XY table movement of 2.7m to place the mould under the required filling nozzle. The system, however, needed to be

able to cope well in the adverse conditions while offering a long service life. To meet the demands, a combination of Hepco’s HDS2 heavy duty beam measuring 10.6m long, with a heavy duty rack driven carriage, enables direct fitting of the Z axis. This

combination provides a robust solution that will be able to withstand the conditions faced and will offer long life and a low maintenance solution. Both these axes function with only cap wipers to wipe debris from the slides and protect the bearings. In fact Hepco’s flagship V bearings are ideally suited for the most hard-wearing applications, with the V technology

ROBUST LINEAR ROLLER SCREW ACTUATORS

Now available from Inmoco are Diakont’s DA99 linear roller screw actuators. Leveraging Diakont’s roller screw designs – which are used by nuclear power plants – the compact actuators are said to deliver increased load capacity, reliability and longer operational lifetimes. The range combines an integrated permanent magnet

synchronous motor (PMSM) and uses a roller screw system for converting rotary torque to linear motion, providing increased rigidity and greater load carrying capacity. These are available in 11 versions offering continuous force up to 11,800N, peak force up to 22,000N and dynamic load up to 56,000N. In addition, they offer stroke lengths from 150mm to 300mm as standard, up to 450mm on request, and have diameters of less than 100mm. Offered in IP65 protection ratings as standard and suitable for temperatures from -15˚C to +40˚C, the actuators can also be provided with IP66 protection and rated for temperatures from -55˚C to +150˚C. DA99 actuators also provide high levels of shock and vibration resistance, and can be optionally supplied in explosion-proof versions. Typical applications include heavy presses, bending machines, injection moulding, positioning systems,

expelling corrosive debris, which could cause failure in other systems. For the X-Y table Hepco supplied

two HDLS heavy duty linear actuators: one unit fitted with a gearbox and adapter plate, and the second unit driven through a connecting shaft. Both units have extended carriages for mounting the Y-axis. The Y-axis comprises of a HDLS actuator with fitted gearbox and adapter plate. A slave unit to suit the above was also fitted. The axes were all fitted with bellows to reduce the maintenance frequency and improve the product life by reducing or eliminating contamination.

INCREASING PRODUCTIVITY Supplied as a complete solution, this application highlights how Hepco’s heavy duty products excel in a hostile environment; and, as the system is hard-wearing and unlikely to require regular maintenance, the products ensure reduced downtime. As a result, the system is capable of

working over extended periods – increasing productivity and decreasing maintenance costs for the company.
