weight behind a growing reshoring trend, stating it believes the country has a ‘once-in-a-generation opportunity to bring back work from low-cost countries as the demand for taking risk out of the supply chain intensifies’. Increased manufacturing in the UK will bring a much needed boost to the economy, so it was great to hear the announcement that a 40GWh battery cell gigafactory is to be built in Somerset. At the time it was announced, Dr Graham Hoare OBE, CEO, MTC and co-chair of UK Automotive Council, said: “The news that the UK has been chosen as the home of Tata Group’s first gigafactory outside India is a significant boost to the UK economy. It provides much needed confidence to the supply chain, secures a pipeline for thousands of high-skilled jobs in Somerset and across the UK, and is an important step on our Net Zero journey.” Reshoring could be seen as a key tool to meet the ambitious Net Zero goals set out for the UK, which brings me onto the topic of our second Sustainability in ManufacturingSupplement which can be found in the centre of this issue.
