A 70+ seater Hybrid Electric Regional Aircraft (HERA), which is expected to deliver a technical and commercial entry point for sustainable mass air transport, has been designed by the Electric Aviation Group (EAG). This UK-based engineering and development firm expects its first aircraft to be in service by 2028. Designed with ‘whisper-quiet operation’ to
reduce noise pollution, this features airborne battery regeneration to minimise turn-around time as well as additional features such as Gear Assisted Take-Off Run (GATOR) for rapid acceleration for a quick lift-off, reducing energy requirements; short take-off-and- landing (STOL) performance which enables new route opportunities; and its cabin-flex design enables passenger operation during the day and cargo operation at night. Suitable for operating from regional airports, it
has the flexibility to transform into all-electric or carbon-neutral as the battery density improves or alternative fuels and associated powertrain technologies mature and become affordable. “Significant investments have been raised
to develop sub-19 seat hybrid and all-electric aircraft which we believe is the wrong strategy. These small planes cannot meet the demands of mass air transportation or the requirements of decarbonisation,” commented Kamran Iqbal, founder and CEO at EAG. “Our design is for an aircraft that will initially offer 800 nautical miles range at launch in 2028, and which will be able to carry over 70 people.” EAG will draw on the rich heritage and
strong aviation industry in Bristol when it begins production of the new aircraft for which it has already developed and filed a total of 25 patents covering a wide range of technologies.
Iqbal added: “We expect this to be a great
example of British design, engineering and build. Not only will the development of the HERA help the Department of Transport accelerate its ‘Jet Zero’ carbon reduction goals, it will also help to create much needed job opportunities in the aerospace, manufacturing, engineering and services industries post-Brexit.”

CELESTIA UK BOOSTS SCOTLAND’S SPACE TECH SECTOR
Celestia UK, specialist in the advancement of state-of- the-art antenna systems used for tracking satellites, has announced that Heriot-Watt University’s Research Park will be its permanent base in Scotland. Establishing the business at the Research Park, which
is the largest science park in Scotland’s capital, will enable the company to embark on its next development phase, which includes setting up new lab and assembly
facilities, as well as provide it with a larger base to deliver cutting-edge innovation in satellite-on-the- move user terminals and gateway systems. Following a £2.5 million R&D award from Scottish
Enterprise earlier this year to develop a new electronic scanning antenna, Celestia UK will create 18 new jobs in Scotland, recruiting engineers across several different disciplines.
SILVER QUALITY PERFORMANCE LEVEL AWARD FOR HARTING
HARTING UK has been awarded the Silver Quality Performance Level award from the International Railway Industry Standard (IRIS), a globally recognised standard which evaluates management systems for the railway sector. Silver is currently the highest performance level issued by IRIS and HARTING is one of only 60 companies worldwide to receive this status, putting the company in the top 3% globally of all IRIS certified companies. Stuart Fisher, director of Operations at HARTING
completely re-think how manufacturing is being carried out. In just a short space of time, many factories and production facilities had to completely
T
shutdown, with production grinding to a halt. Could it be that the answer to preventing this happening in the future lies in Industry 4.0 and the ‘Smart Factory’? As David Messant, production manager at norelem explains, the
manufacturing sector needs to adapt to different working conditions, such as having the ability to manage robots remotely and control machines off-site; and allowing maintenance engineers to diagnose problems and solve issues remotely. Turn to page 32 to find out more. Another interesting area comes from our increasing reliance on
touchscreen technology – from our smartphones and in-car entertainment systems, to machine controllers and even medical equipment. With the risk of spreading or acquiring the infection so high from touching items, will there be a move away from touchscreens to ‘touchless’ technology? Turn to page 28 to find out how ‘COVID care’ will have a transformative effect on medical instrument design and patient treatment.

ANALOG DEVICES COLLABORATES WITH INTEL ON RADIO PLATFORM
Analog Devices (ADI) has announced a collaboration with Intel Corporation to create a flexible radio platform that addresses 5G network design challenges and will enable customers to scale their 5G networks more quickly and economically. The new radio platform combines
the advanced technology of ADI’s radio frequency (RF) transceivers with the high performance and low power of Intel Arria 10 Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), giving developers a new set of design tools for more easily creating optimised 5G solutions.
