CLUTCHES, BRAKES & COUPLINGS  PRODUCTS COUPLING RANGE SUITS EV MOTOR TESTING

Couplings from Reich are already widely used on combustion engine test benches, so it is a natural progression for the company’s technology to play a key role in the testing of EV motors. The new FLEXDUR FD-HS range are all-steel

BALL SCREW UNITS FOR EMERGENCY BRAKING SYSTEMS

Automatic emergency braking systems help prevent accidents by scanning the road ahead and engaging the brakes to avoid potential collisions. With increasing numbers of

regulators around the world mandating new vehicles be equipped with these automatic emergency braking systems, NSK has implemented plans to expand its production of ball screw units for electric-hydraulic brakes To pre-empt the rise in demand,

NSK has a roadmap in place to produce ten million of these ball screw units globally by 2026. The compact and lightweight

unit is a combination of high reliability ball screw and support bearing. The units can already be found in existing road vehicles, with more and more automakers rolling out implementation to further models.

couplings suitable for applications where high rotational speeds are required. The couplings use bushed, flexible disc packs, manufactured from stainless spring steel as power transmitting elements. The special shape of the precision bushes ensures uniform stress distribution across the disc pack and this, together with high-grade fitting bolts, ensures backlash-free torque transmission. The disc pack is laid out such that it combines high

torque capacity with high rotational speed capability and has been specifically designed for test bench applications. The FLEXDUR FD-HS covers a nominal

COMPACT SPRING ACTUATED SAFETY BRAKES

The BXR-LE type super slim spring actuated safety brake, available from ABSSAC, is half the thickness, but the same outer diameter, as its big brother – type BXW series. This is operated by the compressive force delivered from several built in springs which are activated in the event of a power failure or if the power is cut off due to an emergency. The new model features holding and braking

torque just under the existing models, and the overall thickness can be as little as 14.0mm in model 035.

BRIDGE OVER THE RIVER GRAND

Built in 1958, the U.S. 31 bridge that spans the River Grand – the longest river in the US state of Michigan – is one of the busiest in the state, with an average of 60,000 vehicles crossing daily and up to 120,000 vehicles during busy weekends and holidays. In recent years, however, the double leaf bascule bridge began to experience malfunctions. During the 2018 Memorial Day Weekend it locked in the open position, causing major traffic jams. Building a new, taller, bridge was considered, but after considering the

local community and environment a major refurbishment project was commissioned instead, with a new motor drive system taking priority. The new drive system is

expected to operate for decades to come, meaning that some failures and maintenance issues will inevitably occur. So a backup drive system has been designed to quickly engage in the event of a failure to keep the bridge working while the main drive is being repaired. For this, the new SFC Series of electric clutch couplings from Warner Electric were installed to the backup drive shafts. The stationary field clutch

coupling (SFC) design doesn’t require brushes or collector rings

to carry current, making them more robust and better suited to harsh environments or varying temperatures. They can be specified in both flange or bearing mounted styles and a splined hub and adapter serves as a coupling for in-line shaft applications. Large size SFC-1525 bearing-mounted clutch couplings with 949Nm

static torque rating and a maximum speed of 2,000rpm were specified for the backup system (where required, a high-torque version of the SFC-1525 is available with 1,830Nm rated torque). The in-line mounting ensured an economic and compact package, while the stationary field design means that the clutch will be unaffected by the varying weather conditions. It will be ready to operate at a moment’s notice whenever the backup drive system is needed. By Memorial Day 2019, the bridge was operating reliably and the

Michigan Department of Transport was able to reassure drivers that there would be no repeat of the prolonged delays experienced the year before.

torque range from 320Nm up to 12500Nm. The permissible rotational speeds are tailored to the requirements of the individual unit on test. The coupling comprises of modular components so can be adapted to a wide range of mounting configurations. Designed as a torsionally rigid double- joint coupling with two flexible disc packs, it

compensates for axial, radial and angular misalignments

and is therefore flexible in all directions. Multiple installation

lengths are available as standard. The

FLEXDUR FD-HS is supplied as standard with clamping hubs for shrink disc connection and

provides a completely backlash-free connection between the shaft and the hub.

According to the company, operational costs can

be lowered by using the BXR-LE series. With all safety brakes, when a machine is running the brake is continuously consuming electrical current in order to maintain the brake in a released condition. However, the necessary electrical energy consumed when the brake starts to release differs greatly from the current draw requirement when the brake is held in the released condition. By optimising this differential with an over excitation power supply, the operational energy saving can be up to 90%. Suitable applications are said to be within servo

motors and robotics. ABSSAC
