LOW CARBON SOLUTIONS

Why businesses should be considering solar for optimal carbon reduction

change, which has far-reaching effects on ecosystems and wildlife.

Installing solar also helps businesses with their

green credentials, which in turn makes it more attractive to customers and stakeholders. As more businesses place significance on being carbon-neutral, big businesses will also need to ensure that their supply chain is also carbon- neutral, and therefore source products and services from other carbon-neutral businesses. Switching to solar energy also means moving away from traditional, polluting energy sources such as oil and gas.

This transition is crucial for meeting carbon

reduction targets in the UK and ultimately helping to combat climate change. However, the most tangible benefit of solar

Chris Sadler, chief executive and founder of Kimble Solar highlights why solar energy is such a great solution for many businesses, as it offers environmental, economic and financial benefits

A

s the world leans into the importance of sustainability, more and more businesses are exploring ways to offset their carbon footprint and lead a greener company,

whilst also benefiting financially. One of the most appealing aspects of solar

energy is its natural benefit. By installing solar panels and battery storage units on business premises, companies can use clean energy and significantly reduce their reliance on carbon- intensive fuels, contributing to a healthier planet. The environmental impact of solar energy extends beyond carbon reduction. By switching to solar, businesses help mitigate climate

energy is the reduction in energy bills. Particularly throughout the summertime in the UK, when the weather is pleasant, and the daylight hours are longer, solar panels can generate enough electricity to completely power a business’s operations. It does of course depend on the size of the business and the available space for solar panels. This is a huge benefit to businesses, as it will significantly reduce energy bills and lessen the company’s reliance on importing electricity from the grid throughout the year. In addition to making energy savings, any surplus solar energy can be sold back to the grid in the form of export payments. The export rates will depend on the energy provider, but some can be quite generous therefore making the

decision to invest in solar even more appealing. With energy prices rising on average by 7% each year and having consistently increased over the past 50-60 years, the savings can be substantial. Once the panels are operational, which takes between 1-10 days for most SMEs (depending on the size of the system), they will then begin to generate free energy, shielding businesses from future energy price hikes for the lifetime of the panels, on average 25-30 years.

Investing in solar energy is not just about sustainability either; it’s also a smart financial move. While the initial installation cost may seem like a large investment, businesses can start seeing returns on their investment in as little as three to four years. Not many businesses know that the costs associated with solar installation are considered a business expense and are tax-deductible.

So, for every pound spent on solar energy, businesses can effectively get 25p off their corporate tax bill. This tax advantage increases the speed of payback by 25%, meaning a payback period of four years can be reduced to just three years.

By adopting solar power, businesses can play a significant role in reducing overall emissions and promoting cleaner energy alternatives. The natural benefits, reduction in energy bills, attractive financial incentives, and positive environmental impact make solar a great option for many businesses.
