EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Building the workforce of tomorrow

T

he building services sector faces a critical skills gap that threatens growth and the transition to Net Zero – a challenge explored in BSEE’s Bridging the Skills Gap supplement this month from pg 21. Encouragingly, many leading companies are taking

proactive steps. Carrier has made skills development a priority, employing 60 apprentices across the UK, with new recruits and graduates supported through its Academy, which offers hands-on training with commercial heat pumps, chillers and air handling units. This commitment is reinforced by apprentice assessment days and the launch of a dedicated apprenticeship brochure.

Adveco continues to support its customers with its range of CIBSE-accredited seminars on best practices for electric-based commercial hot water systems. Digital transformation is also reshaping the sector.

As Ryan Donoghue of AJ Digital notes, technology presents a chance to attract younger talent, with digital services playing a growing role in construction. Vent-Axia supports the industry through its latest CIBSE-approved CPD course on heat recovery ventilation, while Business Edge is tailoring F Gas training to heating engineers moving into heat pumps. And as Viessmann highlights, while mandatory product training may be declining, targeted workshops remain a valuable tool for building skills and confidence. • Another highlight this month is our picture page

review of last month’s Building Services Forum which focused on the critical subject of retrofit. With most of the UK’s building stock still standing in 2050, how we upgrade what already exists will shape the path to Net Zero. The BSF tackled this subject head-on. See pg 8.
