BUILDING SERVICES FORUM
Building Services Forum puts retrofit centre stage with expert insights and debate
The Building Services Forum returned last month with a sharp focus on one of the sector’s most pressing issues: retrofit
H
osted by journalist and PR consultant Ewen Rose, the event brought together leading voices from across building services to unpack both the opportunities and
challenges in adapting existing buildings for a low-carbon future. A packed agenda featured expert
presentations and a panel discussion exploring practical retrofit solutions including heat pumps and hybrids, smart controls and lighting and the latest approaches to indoor air quality. The challenge of navigating a rapidly shifting legislative landscape was a key concern with delegates while another highlight was the emerging role of AI in building services and how data and digital tools could help deliver smarter, more efficient outcomes.
The forum’s aim was clear: not simply to present information, but to spark discussion and
encourage collaboration. Delegates were urged to take fresh ideas back to their own organisations, with a view to applying lessons learned in their ongoing retrofit journeys. By combining technical insights with opportunities for open debate, the day created a valuable platform for knowledge exchange across the industry. The strong turnout and lively interaction underlined how critical retrofit has become— and the conversation was far from over. Here’s what some of the delegates had to say… From headline sponsor Mitsubishi Electric, market & product intelligence specialist Harvey Loyal said: “We’ve done this event a few times now and we have thoroughly enjoyed it every time, so it was definitely a good idea to come back. “Today’s theme is a particularly interesting one. This is a heavy topic and my message to everyone is that while it is great to have new
technologies and a will to decarbonise, we must seriously consider retrofit, because that is one of the quickest way’s we will achieve our Net Zero goal.”
Executive Chairman of the DMA Group Steve McGregor said: “It’s not every event you come to where you can see participants from across the industry – designers, customers, installers, maintenance companies – so it’s been really good to see things through a different lens. Alex Hill managing director of Whitecode Consulting said: “It’s good to come to these events so we can shout about the things we can change and make better, and for me the changing legislative landscape discussed today has been very interesting.
“I am a designer at heart and my message is we need more regulation. We need certainty on when that regulation is going to hit, particularly in the retrofit market. Once we have certainty, we can commit and get on with the design.”
