ighting control requirement in commercial environments may occur for many reasons, including building control regulations, environmental standards, or simply the desire to save energy and money. Lighting controls can often seem a daunting prospect with the emergence of convoluted control systems and ever- evolving terminology. With multiple platforms available it can become perplexing to the client who has a clear goal in mind. It’s therefore important for the end user to be able to control their own space, whether a small office, or multiple estates.


Intelligent wireless lighting


Luceco’s LiteIP system provides a flexible, intelligent wireless lighting system requiring no complicated electrical installation and no limit to the number of luminaires that can be controlled. The system does more than control lighting, it controls how you use your space. Real-time energy monitoring and heat mapping lets the system accurately tell you the most used areas of your building, allowing you to evolve your facility to be the best it can be. This allows end users to monitor both the fiscal cost of their lighting as well as their workspace optimisation. Settings can easily be altered and re-commissioned to suit the ever-changing needs of a room or building.


Lighting control systems should give freedom to facility managers to control the lighting system itself. LiteIP allows the luminaires to share information with one another, in conjunction with occupancy sensors, allowing a complete, automated lighting system. Occupancy sensors ensure that the luminaires are not used when the room is unoccupied, dimming or switching off the fittings. This can dramatically reduce energy consumption in a building or facility, as the luminaires are only on when needed.


Daylight dimming ensures that lighting is at a consistent level of illumination, in conjunction with natural levels changing throughout the day. This is crucial for buildings with large windows or skylights, as it complements the natural light levels. An individual daylight sensor per zone allows for harmonised daylight dimming and will ensure there is a consistent even light level across the whole area.


Emergency operation


Another consideration is the inclusion of self-testing emergency operation. No longer are facilities managers or contractors required to complete laborious function tests or duration tests of emergency lighting. Emergency lighting can be scheduled and reviewed across multiple estates via the online portal.


Finally, although LED lighting is very reliable, occasionally failures can occur. A frustration for many facilities managers is knowing whether it is simply a driver failure or something more serious. The answer is to incorporate voltage boards into luminaires. This means multiple estates can be managed via the online portal, the driver and board status of each product would then be visible remotely.

The nontechnical, technical bit


LiteIP requires no special lighting controls design work. Each wireless luminaire is programmed to operate using drag and drop menus within LiteIP software. Changes to individual luminaire operation, to improve light usage, can be made without the need to alter any wiring. Furthermore, emergency lighting tests can be run automatically, with monitoring email alerts and reports generated avoiding the need for manual recording of results. The lighting installation is also simple and can be completed as if no lighting controls are required, each luminaire needs only live, earth and neutral, no expensive control cables are needed. This is followed by a commissioning engineer setting up the system on-site, applying settings and grouping luminaires as required. LiteIP is compatible with all driver types including DSI, DALI and 1-10 V. Other features include presence and daylight detection, energy monitoring and reporting.
