requirement for cables, the Approved Cables Initiative (ACI) believes non- compliant Declarations of Performance (DoPs) and inaccurate marketing material are misinforming and confusing the market place. Despite extensive campaigns from the ACI and many in the cable supply chain there is evidence that DoPs and CE marking on labels are being incorrectly drafted and applied, potentially rendering them invalid.

Peter Smeeth, of the Approved Cables Initiative said: “It is too early to assess whether such discrepancies are due to lack of knowledge or whether there are

ust three months since CPR (Construction Products Regulation) became a mandatory

elements of deliberate misinformation. We have spent many months educating the market place on CPR and since 1st July we have been monitoring the UK cable market for any infringements.

“Already we are seeing labels with no unique identifier, incorrect reference to the intended use of the product, incorrect classification marking and some instances where no DoP number is shown. We are aware of one cable manufacturer that has examined many DoPs during the first month of CPR and has found fewer than 20% to be correct.”

CPR places strict requirements upon all manufacturers and suppliers (including those importing cable into the EU): u All relevant products must be tested and classified

u Relevant DoPs are to be drawn up and made available to cable purchasers u Relevant product labels must carry the CE marking, the class of performance, unique DoP reference number, scheme of assessment and ID of the relevant Notified Body.

Where a DoP is not valid then the cable must not be placed on the market or sold through the supply chain.

Distributors must ensure that relevant cable bought and sold is CPR compliant – failure to do so could result in legal action. Cables must have a declared classification, a DoP and be CE marked and labelled. Cable that does not comply should be withdrawn or recalled.

“The ACI is also aware of discrepancies in the description of EN 50575 on DoP

BSRIA expands UKAS accredited calibration operations to BSRIA North

s an existing UKAS ISO/IEC 17025 accredited calibration laboratory, BSRIA is extending its scope to cover its new BSRIA North operation and laboratory in Preston, Lancashire.

BSRIA North now offers calibration of temperature and pressure devices including barometers, as well air volume flow devices (fans) – which are used in many sectors of industry including the testing of buildings during air tightness testing to Part L of the Building Regulations. June Davis, Business Manager, BSRIA North, said: “Construction of the custom designed Preston

laboratory was started in February 2017 and the assessment of the facility by UKAS within six months enables us to now fully support both our existing client base across the UK as well expand our operations into new markets.”

Martin Trotter, Calibration

Manager, BSRIA Instrument Solutions, said: “The opening of our second laboratory is a significant milestone for BSRIA as it not only doubles our UK capacity for testing fans, gauges and temperature devices used by air tightness engineers, it also gives BSRIA a northern base which allows clients to drop-off and collect their goods from a regional facility.”

ompressed air and vacuum manufacturer Gardner Denver is inviting businesses in the Midlands to its free energy efficiency seminar focusing on improving compressed air and vacuum efficiency at the Jaguar Visitor Centre in Castle Bromwich. Taking place on Tuesday, 10th October from 10am, the event will feature talks from a range of speakers, including Marion Beaver, Technical Officer at the British Compressed Air Society (BCAS), on reducing energy consumption from compressed air usage, and Will Todd, Managing Director at Carbon Architecture, on driving utility efficiency through data. With compressed air accounting for ten per cent of total energy costs in industry, energy-intensive organisations will benefit from the issues raised and practical recommendations and advice offered throughout the day. Keith Findlay, Northern Sales Manager at Gardner Denver, which is sponsoring the event, said: “We want organisations to leave with a clear action plan of how they can enhance their business by improving operational efficiencies, reducing energy costs and minimising the environmental impact of their compressed air systems.” Spaces are limited. Electrical contractors are urged to

ow efficiency halogen bulbs are expected to be banned from September 2018 and studies have shown that only one in 20 people are aware that the ban is coming.

Electrical supplier ElectricalDirect.co.uk is urging electrical contractors to be aware of the facts so that they can inform their customers as the ban approaches, to ensure they are prepared and ready for the switchover.

Wayne Lysaght-Mason, Managing Director of ElectricalDirect commented: “While most electrical contractors may be aware that the halogen ban will

come into place later next year, their customers might not be. We’re urging our customers, the electrical contractors of the UK, to inform their clients of the benefits of LEDs now, so they are ready when the ban comes into place.

“Many consumers might be reluctant to make the upfront payment to switch their homes to LED, especially as halogen bulbs are still considerably cheaper to buy in the shops at the moment, but all electricians need to do is to let their customers know that they will be much better off in the long run once they have made the change.”

8 BUILDING SERVICES & ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEER OCTOBER 2017

J S Wright will provide the accommodation with energy efficient combined heat and power by installing a centralised energy centre and a pipe network to deliver

low pressure hot water from the unit to each apartment through heat interface units. The company will also equip each apartment with energy efficient underfloor heating and an eco-friendly internal rainwater system as well as install a booster set and tank room for delivering instant cold water to all the properties.

The brief also includes fitting a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system that will use the outgoing air from each apartment to heat incoming fresh air. J S Wright will also install sanitary ware and above- ground drainage for the buildings, along with building management controls including M-Bus wiring for metering each apartment’s energy consumption. The 26-month contract is scheduled for completion in September 2019.

Giacomini receives RIBA CPD course approval

iacomini, a leading UK underfloor heating provider, is offering a RIBA Approved CPD course to architects and construction professionals.

The underfloor heating course explores the theory behind radiant heating, the benefits of underfloor heating and the make up and design of a system. The course also explains heat transfer, design factors and component applications and gives

participants an understanding of

how and why underfloor heating systems work.

RIBA members can now take the course to contribute towards their CPD qualifications. The RIBA course will complement Giacomini’s existing CIBSE approved CPD offering on underfloor heating and heat interface units.

labelling as well as the classification of cables and there are several examples of misleading marketing material in circulation. Whether this is accidental or deliberate, it is bringing added confusion to the market. Where such instances are brought to our attention we will inform relevant authorities,” continued Smeeth. “This however raises a further issue concerning the ability of the authorities to conduct effective market surveillance and we would support any improvements that can be made to strengthen the ability to find falsely declared products, and to enforce their withdrawal from the market quickly.” Advice on substandard cable can be found at www.aci.org.uk or you can also call 0208 946 6978/07973 636688 or email info@aci.org.uk
