BSEEINSTALLATION NEWS

Luceco and Oakray have recently provided energy efficient LED lighting solutions for prominent buildings within the Hertfordshire County Council (HCC) Estate including a major office lighting upgrade at HCC’s Farnham and Robertson House Buildings in Stevenage.

Hertfordshire County Council’s extensive open plan offices were originally lit with 55 W PL compact fluorescent luminaires. To meet their objectives, Hertfordshire County Council required a lighting refurbishment where significant cost savings and return on investment could be demonstrated, energy efficiencies made to lower CO2 emissions and a total reduction in maintenance.

HCC also recognised the benefits of good lighting and providing ambient surroundings that stimulates a feeling of wellbeing and motivation in the workplace. Luceco was chosen by Oakray as the LED luminaire supplier due to the diverse product range, both internal and external, and the dramatic reduction in energy consumption, particularly with the use of LuxPanel luminaires in the open plan areas. Installed by Oakray, Luceco’s LuxPanels have a unique design; the high efficiency backlit panels offer a market leading efficacy of 147 Llm/cW. The sizeable reduction in the number of fittings required helped to provide additional ROI.

Platinum Downlights were installed in corridors and circulation spaces providing an ideal retrofit replacement for compact fluorescent luminaires, offering running cost savings of up to 80%. As a leading M&E provider, Enfield-based Oakray is committed to a philosophy of continuous improvement with emphasis on cost effective, environmentally friendly installations. Facilitating the relationship between Luceco and HCC, Oakray is responsible for M&E maintenance of over 300 sites, with more than 50 sites in the process of LED lighting refurbishments.

Keith Mottram, Commercial Director at Oakray said: “The relationship between Oakray and Luceco has helped us to provide an efficient, high quality and reliable service to HCC, both in terms of supply and installation of LED lighting.”

The 3 x 2.5 MW burners at the site were installed in 1982 to meet a site demand of around 5MW with N+1 resilience so that heat loads could be met with one boiler offline for maintenance or repair.

Because of the age of the burners, and efficiency issues, Telereal Trillium undertook a technical review to assess condition and future operational life of the boiler plant. Having considered several options, a comprehensive refurbishment was identified as the best option, bringing them up to the standard of any new boiler on the market. A further benefit of refurbishment was reduced disruption, taking advantage of the N+1 configuration.

The refurbishment by Steam Plant Hire (Halesowen) included installation of new high efficiency insulation, refractory, control wiring, casings, gas and oil pipe systems and replacement of the obsolete burners. Selecting

the correct burner system was critical to achieving the required combustion efficiency, along with improved turndown and low emissions (including NOx).

Following a full burner matching process by Riello RLS300 EV O2 BLU low NOx dual-fuel burners were identified as offering the best option.

Arthur Portelli commented: “This was a particularly challenging project for a whole number of reasons and I was impressed with the manner that the team handled all the problems we encountered at the design, tender and project stage. The support from the Riello sales and technical teams has been first class, only equalled by the burners that have lived up to all expectations.”

How do you balance creating a comfortable internal environment for clients, against a clean and still atmosphere for them to use your luxury hand‐made guns? You use the expertise of Gilberts…

Gilberts helps accuracy in line of fire

Blackpool engineering company, Gilberts, arguably Britain’s leading air movement specialist, has applied its technical wizardry to create the perfect atmosphere for a new indoor, underground shooting range.

“It was quite a challenge, to ensure the guests and potential purchasers enjoyed a safe, comfortable atmosphere, with appropriate levels of fresh air, and air quality, against anything which could disturb the flow and accuracy of the bullets as weapons were discharged,” says Gilberts Technical Director, Roy Jones.

Roy and his team devised a solution whereby a floor to ceiling wall of grilles was constructed in front of the entrance and observation gallery, to provide a laminar flow down the length of the shooting range, with all of the air travelling in one direction, away from clients.

“The airflow pattern was essential to avoid any disturbance of the bullet’s travel through the air,” added Jones. “Typically we would vent a space

from the ceiling down, which obviously would impact on the flight path, and potentially create turbulence, which needed to be avoided at all costs!” An even wall of air at the shooting line was the desired objective; however, that potentially created ‘dead zones’ where the doors and viewing windows did not allow air entry. Gilberts’ solution was to manufacture the bespoke units, from designs formed using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, then individually test them within its in- house facility to ensure the airflow was perfectly even. On site, careful pre-balancing of each plenum and grille, and adjustment of each blade within the grilles, from the top of the wall down, at commissioning stage addressed the issue to create the correct air pattern of even airflow across the face. The Unlimited Company (previously Independent Living and part of the Simplyhealth Group) is creating stores with a fresh approach to shopping for daily living aids and mobility products to answer everyday independence needs.

uSupplied and installed by Closomat, the Changing Places toilet enables anyone who needs help to go to the loo to do so.

The new Leeds store is piloting concepts to help customers, including an accessible kitchen and bathroom, a demonstration area and there’s even an in-house Occupational Therapist. The Leeds store is the first within the chain, and – it is believed – in its sector in the country, to include a Changing Places assisted accessible toilet.

Supplied and installed by Closomat, the Changing Places toilet enables anyone who needs help to go to the loo to do so, with the space and equipment they require. It is bigger than a conventional wheelchair accessible toilet, to accommodate the user and up to two carers, and includes additional equipment – particularly a ceiling track hoist and height-adjustable, adult-sized changing bench.

To further optimise use of the facility by as many customers as possible, the conventional WC has been replaced with a Closomat Palma Vita wash & dry toilet. Looking like, and capable of being used as a conventional loo, douching and drying are built into the Closomat.

Under Building Regulations, and British Standards, a Changing Places toilet is desirable in large buildings with public access. Closomat is Britain’s leading provider of helpful toileting solutions, at home and away, including Changing Places. The company provides an in-house, ‘one- stop-shop’ complete package for ‘away from home’ assisted accessible toilet facilities, from design and commissioning, through to project management, supply and installation, and can provide maintenance and repair. Independence is being taken to new levels in shopping for people in and around Leeds, with what is believed to be a ‘first’ for mobility retail environments.

Following a detailed technical appraisal and competitive tender exercise, Riello burners were selected as the best match for the refurbished boilers at a high profile government site in Swansea, managed on behalf of Telereal Trillium by Arthur Portelli of Oakbury Building Services Consultants.
