EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Off-site fabrication trend is growing
W
hile not new, off-site fabrication is becoming a buzz phrase in construction and has many benefits including time and cost savings.
Also at times referred to as Modern Methods of Construction (MME) it refers to fabrication of building components and equipment somewhere other than at the building site.
Many of the contributors to BSEE’s features now engage in off-site construction, as we can read this month from Baxi Commercial Solutions who explore how it can benefit boiler installations (page 10). It is thought off-site fabrication uses much less
energy than traditional methods of construction and could cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 30 per cent. With businesses feeling the squeeze from rocketing prices of energy, goods and services, now is the perfect time to look at this trend in more depth.
Look out for the subject of off-site construction, which will feature more regularly in BSEE next year. The question of energy security is on every building manager’s lips and is likely to be for some time. While the government has offered short-term help to both households and businesses to get through the winter, it is still grappling with the question of long-term energy security. The heat pump roll out and the future role of
alternative energy sources are well-documented but there is also potential to use waste heat to boost energy efficiency at scale through heat networks. On page 9, Pete Mills of Bosch Commercial & Industrial explores what we can expect from heat networks – an industry still in its adolescence but on a path to maturity.
