T


he ground-breaking advantages of Fujitsu’s DX Kits increase the opportunities for connecting air


conditioning products to third-party ventilation systems to provide both cooling and heating. Updated advice about operating centralised ventilation systems post-covid has led to increased requirements for cooling or heating air that is supplied into a building, leading to an increase in energy consumption and a higher impact on the environment.


The Fujitsu DX Kit is a simple yet comprehensive solution that works by supplying heating and cooling to ventilation systems from an air conditioning product.


A unique operating range allows


the removal or significant reduction of pre-heat and frost protection, resulting in high cost savings for operation and significant environmental benefit in CO₂eq emissions and the removal of fossil fuel products. Joining electronic expansion valves in a parallel piping configuration allows an industry- first 50kW heat exchanger capacity whilst maintaining precise control for capacity staging across multiple heat exchangers, multiple ventilation systems and heat recovery applications. With outstanding controllability, easy piping design and simple system wiring, the Fujitsu DX Kits not only improve installation practices but make them fully customisable to multiple control strategies. Careful design can help realise the full potential of an HVAC system and there are three main features that elevate the Fujitsu DX system to industry-leading status.


1.


Increased capacity with parallel piping Electronic expansion devices are generally limited to only allow 25kW cooling capacity, which means that the maximum heat exchanger capacity within an AHU or ventilation system would be 25kW. An exclusive feature from Fujitsu is the ability to connect two EEVs in parallel to provide an unprecedented 50kW from one heat exchanger while maintaining complete controllability; in essence, expanding the application and associated benefits across a much wider range of applications.

No need for expensive pre-heat When specifying an air conditioning system, we would normally determine the minimum room temperature for heating at circa 16°C, to maintain a balance between indoor and outdoor temperatures. The standard rule for this type of application is that the entering ambient air can be as low as 10°C, as below that

the system is inoperable or some kind of third party pre-heat device is required for frost protection or to raise the air temperature inline with guidance for the DX heat exchanger.


As an industry first and exclusive, Fujitsu DX systems continue to operate with entering ambient air temperature down to -7°C. This means that an expensive pre-heat can be removed completely or, if the design requires operating to lower ambient, reduces the operating costs significantly. This revolutionary design concept is made possible by an improved system control logic that allows condensing temperature to increase, maintain high heat exchange ratios and maintain suitable suction temperature without hyper condensation.


3. Benefitting from heat recovery By using heat recovery methods, the energy removed from rooms in cooling can be reused in rooms that require heating. This concept has also been integrated into DX application, so not only can energy be recovered from fan coil to DX heat exchanger, recovery can also occur between DX heat exchangers or between air handling units. When we apply heat recovery application to this type of design it means that we can remove energy in one heat exchanger, cooling the air and lowering


relative humidity, then transfer that energy through the refrigeration circuit and reintroduce it via the subsequent heat exchanger operating in heating. The only power requirement from a compressor point of view would be enough to provide the cooling side of the system – heating would be provided at little or no extra cost.


Scalability


The range can cover total heating or cooling loads from 3.5 to 150kW from a single refrigerant system, opening up an extensive market. Given the modular nature of Fujitsu air conditioning products, linking through a comprehensive control network allows scalability above 150 kW whilst still maintaining simple, co-joined control strategies if required.


Integration


To help installers and consultant designers further, the full range of Fujitsu DX kits have been integrated within the Fujitsu inhouse design software, which is openly available. This helps with the selection of not only product models but provides guidance for heat exchanger design in terms of volume, fin spacing and specific airflow ranges for a specific kW rating.
