EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Concern over new EU F-gas timetable
T
he EU’s recent decision to accelerate the phase down of F-gases has been met with some alarm in UK HVACR circles.
The European Parliament voted to speed up the timetable for eliminating the use of f-gases in stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems from the start of 2026. Here in the UK, trade bodies including the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA)and the Federation of Environmental Trade Associations (FETA) have weighed in on the subject and called for calm. BESA in particular has drawn attention to “serious safety concerns” as the new timetable would inevitably lead to an increase in the amount of flammable gas in circulation. BESA technical director Graeme Fox has called on the government to take a pragmatic approach and
make up its own mind on this occasion about which rules to follow.
Both BESA and FETA applauded the EU for trying
to reduce GWP for refrigerants, but questioned the move from an energy efficiency point of view. FETA chair Mark Hughes said the EU was focusing on legislation that might reduce GWP for refrigerants but it was doing so at the expense of a “much bigger prize of energy efficiency”.
It’s one of the biggest issues affecting the HVACR industry currently and it was addressed by Mr Fox at the recent HVACR Live show held at eXcel London last week and by Mr Hughes at the annual FETA luncheon. Read more on pages 4 & 9. Also featured this month are Lighting, CHP, Fluid
Control, Air Conditioning, Cooling & Ventilation. Heather Ramsden, Editor
