Sharp rise in demand for connected buildings
A new study has found the number of buildings globally deploying smart building technologies will reach 115 million in 2026, from 45 million in 2022. This growth of over 150% reflects increasing demand for energy efficiency from businesses and residents alike, as energy costs spike.
Juniper Research, which specialises in identifying and appraising high growth market sectors, released the prediction in its new research report, Smart Buildings: Key Opportunities, Competitor Leaderboard & Market Forecasts 2022-2026.
This detailed analysis offers a very optimistic vision of the evolution of the smart buildings market. Juniper Research says it defines a smart building as one that uses connectivity to enable economical use of resources. It does so while creating a safe and comfortable environment for occupants. The research found that by enabling buildings to monitor and automate common functions, significant efficiency gains can be made. Non-residential smart buildings are projected to account for 90% of smart building spend globally in 2026; at a similar level to 2022. This is due to the larger economies of scale in commercial premises driving this spend, as well as the commercial focus of most smart building technologies. Research co-author Dawnetta Grant commented: “Smart building platform vendors will understandably focus on non-residential use cases, as these provide a stronger return on investment, but they should not neglect the importance of residential deployments, as environmental concerns intensify.” Gavin Holvey, Priva’s UK & Ireland general manager said : “I am not surprised that there is such a high level of demand for connected, intelligent buildings – although the numbers that Juniper have predicted are phenomenal, albeit on a global basis. To get there, much will need to be done – particularly in the UK – to address the skills gap in training more people to engineer and commission smart building technologies. We know that our colleagues at the BCIA are working hard to address this and many of our Priva Partners are working hard to train and recruit new talent. All in all, the future looks very bright indeed.” Juniper says global shipments of sensors used in smart buildings will exceed 1 billion annually in 2026 from 360 million in 2022; a growth of 204%. Sensors, when combined with intelligent management platforms, allow smart buildings to adapt to conditions. Elements such as lighting, heating and ventilation are thus matched to live requirements.

Joint venture to provide opportunities for women in the cooling sector
A new initiative called the International Network for Women in Cooling (INWIC) has been launched to advance the engagement of women, promote
career opportunities, and increase their overall participation in the sector, which includes refrigeration, air-conditioning, and heat pumps (RACHP). INWIC is led by the World Refrigeration Day (WRD) Secretariat and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) OzonAction in cooperation with a highly- reputed group of founding partners. Although women make up half of the world’s population, they are significantly and visibly under-represented in the RACHP sector in all roles. INWIC seeks to reverse that trend. It is doing so while recognising that there are many initiatives and structures established by different partners that are promoting women’s engagement in the RACHP field. However, more cooperation and information exchange at the global level is needed to link these individual efforts. There are over 300 national, regional, and
international associations, organisations, and institutions in the RACHP sector, however fewer than 20 (5%) of these have sections specifically for women. Corresponding data indicates that where these women’s sections do exist, there is a greater number of women actively involved in the committees and structures of these bodies, which in turn increases the opportunities to raise the visibility of women in the sector.
Coolair Equipment, which is headquartered in Manchester with offices in Maidstone and the Midlands, will now establish a permanent base in Newcastle, headed-up by Mr Walsh. John Otterson, managing director of Coolair Equipment, said: “As a nationwide air conditioning specialist, our services have always been available in Scotland and the North East. “However, we want to cement our presence and roll out more services to clients within
these regions, and with Mark at the helm, I am confident we will do so. Mark brings with him a wealth of experience and as well as working with major distributors, he has long had a presence within the HVAC industry in our new territories.” Mr Walsh, a native of Newcastle Upon Tyne, has sold millions of pounds worth of equipment across the country and is no stranger to major projects, having organised the delivery and installation of some of the largest chillers available in the UK. He said: “Coolair Equipment Limited is renowned within the industry and I know it is a company to grow with.
Jenact appoints new sales manager
In a move to drive sales of its high performance UV disinfection systems, JenAct– part of the Jenton Group of companies – has announced the appointment of Michael Elrington to sales manager.
“’You can’t be what you can’t see!’
There are not enough visible ‘women in cooling’ role models. We want to change that,” said Stephen Gill – head of WRD Secretariat. “We will create a resource for girls and young women to see bite-size videos and read real-life stories from a diverse range of women in different roles within the cooling sector. This will also serve to connect and inspire women currently working in the cooling sector.” INWIC will connect women in the sector, empowering them to succeed through networking opportunities, mentoring, education, to shine as visible role models to change outdated perceptions to leave a lasting legacy to inspire the next generation of women innovators and problem-solvers. It will also offer opportunities to women from developing countries.
