EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Lighten the load on energy bills
R
ocketing energy prices are putting a financial squeeze on households and businesses and the threat of further hikes is causing serious concern.
These days it doesn’t take long for conversations about efficiency to work their way around to spirally energy costs and for businesses, that means it is crucial to look at the building as a whole to find hidden savings. One such area might be lighting which can account for almost 40 per cent of all energy used in commercial buildings. It follows that if building managers are able to save costs on lighting, not only is it a good way to cut energy bills, but it could also help businesses take a few leaps along the path to Net Zero.
This month BSEE’s focus on lighting addresses the savings that can be made from upgrading lighting, but crucially also examines how the right solution can reduce embodied carbon. Ansell Lighting champions the idea of smart lighting where every single detail of lighting can be programmed and automated so that it is used only where and when it is needed. Meanwhile Whitecroft Lighting explores the idea of reducing embodied carbon in lighting, reminding us that once emitted, embodied carbon cannot be retrieved, so it is vital to implement the right solution at the outset. There are also plenty more features this month on the subjects of boilers & hot water; and air conditioning, cooling & ventilation.
