R


etrofit and sustainable building design is a new feature for BSEE this year and the Insulation Manufacturer’s Association kicks it off this month highlighting poor efficiency in existing homes. Pointing out that insulation is one of the most effective methods of reducing energy demand, the association pinpoints PIR and PUR insulation (pg 10) as having an invaluable role in ensuring a sustainable future for our housing stock.


This month we also focus on Data Centres & Cable Management with features from Spirotech on why a cradle to grave service is ideal to manage the complexities of the sector, while thermal breaks specialist, Armatherm, discusses the importance of isolating temperatures as much as possible within data centres. The feature starts on pg 15. Elsewhere this month, air source and ground source


heat pumps are in the spotlight. Toshiba Carrier UK, explains how weather compensation, working alongside heat pumps, can improve comfort and efficiency while Stiebel Eltron calls on the renewable heating sector to challenge the myths surrounding heat pumps. We also hear about three major projects involving air source heat pumps in Norfolk which cut carbon emissions by 66 per cent; and a ground source heat pump project in Cornwall which provides 140 homes with low-cost, carbon efficient heating. • Don’t forget The Building Services Forum is scheduled for June 6 at The Building Centre in London. The one-day technical briefing will have a special emphasis on building retrofit and a panel debate on the subject is also being planned. (See pg 4)
