he John Foster Building at Liverpool John Moores University has recently undergone a lighting refurbishment, Luceco suppling the luminaires for the project. The John Foster Building was
a former nunnery, the facilities providing a beautiful setting for teaching including humanities and social science departments, IT suites, and dedicated postgraduate study areas. A range of luminaires installed by I.E.D. Installations, electrical
and data contractors based in Liverpool, included linear Academy, recessed LuxPanel Extra and Platinum Mini downlighters along with Luceco’s wireless lighting control system. Academy is a surface linear range of luminaires, designed with
educational establishments in mind, available in 1200, 1500 and 1800 mm lengths with a choice of high or low outputs with an efficacy up to 129 Llm/cW. With microprism polycarbonate opal diffuser, Academy is a robust fitting with clean aesthetics. Polycarbonate

hen architects Scott Brownrigg were given a brief to create a new gateway to Cambridge Science Park they knew the building had to be impressive to attract the desired high
tech and Research and Development companies. The design features a colonnade sweeping across the front of
the building echoing the curve of the spine road and a new public space. The column spacing guides occupants and visitors to the entrance – a GEZE Slimdrive SCR curved automatic sliding door. The building has a BREEAM Excellent rating for its design so the Slimdrive SCR was the perfect complement. The circular entrance features two sets of automatic bi-parting curved glass sliding doors, creating a lobby that minimises heat loss or gain and so helps to contribute to the building’s environmental credentials In addition the Slimdrive SCR automatic curved sliding door provides a light and airy all-glass lobby entrance which blends seamlessly into the façade and the large glass atrium, it combines high performance with unobtrusive operation.

was installed to further minimise any heat loss and maintain the aesthetics of the building. The Slimdrive SCR automatic operator also provides uninhibited access and so meets the demands of Part M, BS 8300 and EN 16005, whilst the access control system ensures security. Recognising the outstanding design of the building, the Cambridge Science Park has been shortlisted for the 2023 British Council for Offices (BCO) Awards. The BCO’s primary objective is to define excellence in office space. ow carbon heating and hot water equipment manufacturer Lochinvar has launched the UK’s most powerful heat
pump water heater. The Amicus Aquastore has an output of 8kW
and 455 litres of hot water storage capacity in a compact monobloc package combining heat pump and storage vessel. It can deliver up to 65degC hot water in both efficiency and hybrid modes and up to 490 litres in a peak hour with a 50degC temperature rise.
The new product is aimed at the burgeoning low carbon replacement market for gas-fired water heaters in commercial buildings and is designed to minimise disruption by avoiding the need for wholesale changes to existing heating and hot water systems. Its space saving monobloc construction means it is easy to manoeuvre into position and offers plenty of options for
positioning – another important consideration for replacement projects. It is also a straightforward ‘plug and play’ process to set up and commission. “Water heater replacements are often distress purchases, which means the end user needs something relatively easy and quick to install,” said Lochinvar’s heat pump technology manager James Cooper. “The beauty of the Amicus Aquastore is that we can offer that
quick response but also provide a solution that dramatically reduces the customer’s energy usage and carbon footprint without the need for a more complex, disruptive and expensive installation.”

ingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Insulated Pipe Support Inserts have been installed as part of the community heating scheme for a new apartment block, forming part of the multi-
million pound regeneration of Birmingham’s Perry Barr area. Work on the apartment block on plot 6 of the Perry Barr development will provide much needed extra care housing provision with 268 one- and two-bedroom apartments. M&E design and build contractors, Dodd Group, developed the building services package for the community heating. With the city committed to reaching Net Zero Carbon by 2030, ensuring efficient operation of the network was crucial. To support this, Kingspan Kooltherm Pipe Insulation and Insulated Pipe Supports were fitted across all low temperature hot water (LTHW) and domestic hot water services (DHWS) pipework within the building by specialist contractors Insulation & Cladding Services Limited. In addition to supporting efficient operation, this should also help to reduce unwanted heat transfer from pipework into the apartments, lowering the risk of overheating during the summer.

of air source heat pumps (ASHPs) which has models delivering domestic hot water capacities from 7.7kW up to 210kW for a wide range of projects including large residential; medium and large commercial; and industrial applications. The Amicus heat pump range employs the innovative principle of Enhanced Vapour Injection (EVI) to improve output and efficiency. This is a two-stage compression process with inter-cooling that produces a superheated vapour that boosts capacity and efficiency. As a result, Amicus units can achieve a Coefficient of Performance (COP) up to 4.4 and are 25% more efficient than standard scroll compressor driven systems. They are also capable of operating in outside temperatures as low as minus 20degC. Amicus heat pumps can be used as stand-alone replacements for conventional heating products or as part of an integrated system providing pre-heated feed water to gas-fired condensing boilers, water heaters and thermal stores in buildings with large heating or hot water demands.

This year see the celebration of 200 years of educating at the Liverpool John Moores whose history goes back to the late industrial revolution. Today the modern civic university demonstrates that they haven’t lost the pioneering zeal of their founding fathers but now enjoying a well-lit environment that is hugely beneficial to learning in educational establishments.
