Diffusion’s new Ultra-Line 360 addresses exposed ceiling design challenges

Across offices, retail environments and hospitality projects, architects and designers are increasingly favouring industrial-style interiors. As a result, the growing popularity of exposed ceilings in commercial buildings is changing how heating and cooling systems are specified.

W

hile aesthetically appealing, exposed- ceiling schemes can create challenges for building services engineers in some

projects. Maintaining thermal comfort, achieving effective air distribution and integrating HVAC systems into the architectural design can require additional coordination and carefully specified ductwork, plenums and air distribution components, adding complexity, installation time and cost. To address these challenges, Diffusion has launched the new Ultra-Line 360 fan coil unit (patent pending), developed specifically for exposed-ceiling applications. Designed and manufactured in the UK, the Ultra-Line 360 combines the proven performance of Diffusion’s award-winning Modular Highline Fan Coil technology with a unique diffuser and integrated plenum and attenuator system engineered to deliver high-performance heating and cooling while complementing contemporary architectural aesthetics. A key feature of the Ultra-Line 360 is its use of the Coandã effect. Through a bespoke diffuser designed and manufactured in-house by Diffusion, conditioned air remains close to the ceiling surface before gradually mixing into the occupied space. This enables air to be distributed effectively over longer distances without requiring higher airflow rates or additional energy consumption.

The result is true 360-degree air distribution, helping minimise draughts, reduce hot and cold spots and prevent cold-air dumping, while providing enhanced thermal comfort for occupants. Importantly, the Ultra-Line 360 has been designed to eliminate the need for ductwork, and separately specified diffusers and plenums. By integrating all core components into a single unit, installation is simplified, fewer trades are required on-site and coordination between different contractors can be significantly reduced. This approach can also help reduce material use and embodied carbon while lowering installation costs and shortening project programmes. Projects can also benefit from fewer fan coil units.

Building on Diffusion’s award-winning Modular Fan Coil technology, the Ultra-Line 360 combines EC/DC motor and fan technology with a high-efficiency heat exchanger to deliver high performance and low noise operation. Offering sound levels as low as NR25 at 125I/s and a Specific Fan Power as low as 0.05W/I/s, the unit has been engineered to provide energy-efficient operation without compromising comfort.

Flexibility is another important consideration. Designed around Diffusion’s modular approach, the Ultra-Line 360 can be reconfigured, relocated or reused if a building changes use in the future, helping reduce waste and capital expenditure over the building lifecycle. Meanwhile, Diffusion’s Lifetime ‘Eco’ wire mesh filter is supplied as standard. Vacuum cleaned in

situ, the filter offers an environmentally conscious alternative to disposable filters, helping reduce waste sent to landfill.

Supplied in galvanised steel, the Ultra-Line 360 can also be powder-coat finished in a customer- specified RAL colour to suit interiors.

Visit a Diffusion Open Day

To give specifiers a closer look at the engineering technology behind the Ultra-Line 360 and its wider fan coil range, Diffusion hosts regular Open Days at its UK manufacturing facility. Here, visitors can:

• See fan coil units assembled on the production line

• Tour Diffusion’s testing rooms where customers can witness acoustic, volumetric and thermal testing

• Meet the Diffusion team, including Technical Director, John Hepper

Consultants wishing to extend their visit can stay for lunch and attend a CIBSE-Approved CPD session, combining structured learning with practical insight.
