EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS A turning point in decarbonisation drive

W

hile 2021 will always be remembered for the pandemic, it was also a turning point in the drive to Net Zero.

No doubt fuelled in part by the hosting of COP26 within the United Kingdom, the Government made its commitment to a low carbon future clear. This was demonstrated with the unveiling of its Hydrogen Strategy, Heat and Buildings Strategy and Net Zero Strategy all within a few months. These documents laid the groundwork for the challenges ahead which will affect us all.

The year 2021 also heralded a big turning point for building safety. The Building Safety Bill came into effect in July, prompted largely as a result the Grenfell Tower tragedy, and establishes a tighter regulatory framework for buildings.

So while 2021 laid the foundations for the path ahead, all those involved in building services now need to pick up the baton going into 2022. This will likely be the year where we will see a ramping up of heat pump installer training and installations, where boiler manufacturers will continue to innovate with carbon friendly technology, where ventilation is pushed up the priority list and building safety is scrutinised like never before. As always, we try to highlight these issues and

more particularly in this month’s features on boilers & hot water; and renewables. Facilities management and energy management are also featured.
