Ariston Group appoints new UK managing director


Ariston Group has appointed Edoardo Pauletta d’Anna as its new UK managing director. Having been part of the company for over a decade, his new role sees him responsible for the growth and development of the Ariston, ELCO and ATAG commercial brands in the UK.


The Campaign to Stop High Street Heat Loss is urging the government to take urgent measures and pass legislation that insists on shop front doors being kept shut, to prevent further environmental impact. In 2018 a Daily Mail investigation found that eight out of 10 flagship stores on Oxford Street in London either wedged their doors open or had completely open shop fronts. David Bennett, chairman of The Campaign to Stop High Street Heat Loss said: “Sadly, despite numerous campaigns and appeals to the Government over the past few years, nothing has been done to mandate a change, and little has changed in the way of how shops operate. “There are those who have chosen to buck the trend, Boots, Marks & Spencer and


Waterstones, plus others, have made the decision to keep their doors closed. But if you walk down any high street today, you will see that most shops – from big chains to small independent retailers still keep their doors wide open. “The reasons shops won’t generally shut their doors are simple – one, because they are afraid their customers will go elsewhere, thinking the shop isn’t open. And two, they dare not make the first move for fear they will lose business to their competitors who keep their doors open.” Research from Cambridge University in 2010 revealed that shops that kept their doors open consumed twice as much electricity as those that did not. Put another way, shops that shut their doors could save up to 10 tonnes of CO2 – the equivalent of three return flights from London to Hong Kong – and cut their energy bills in half. And if all retailers followed suit, the country’s overall energy usage could drop by 2.5 per cent.


When the Cambridge University study took place, the practice of keeping doors open no matter the weather was thought to cost retailers £1billion a year. With the current energy crisis meaning that energy prices are now around 3.5 times higher than they were in 2010, the overall figure is likely to be close to £3.5billion for 2023. Put very simply – shops can save up to 54% of their overall energy expenditure just by keeping their doors closed. But most are not willing to make that change. The team behind the campaign argues that without legislation this problem is not going to be solved; instead of waiting for people to make the first move — they state that the Government must make regulations that stipulate that all shops must keep their doors closed by law – because if all shops have to keep their doors closed by law, then no one retailer should think they are at a disadvantage, and everyone benefits. For this reason, The Campaign to Stop High Street Heat Loss has launched a new

Artificial street built in York as training ground


Develop Training, accredited providers of compliance, technical and safety training, is constructing a fully to-scale artificial street in York to provide immersive, real life training experiences within its replica buildings. Made possible by an investment of £325,000 by Develop Training and its parent company, JTL, the artificial street launches in the spring, providing training in emergency response to gas incidents, as well as excavation safety, cable avoidance, sewer jetting and confined space entry. Located next to Develop Training’s York training centre in Huby, the site will consist of purpose-built houses, apartments, a café, and a confined spaces area, and will offer free use to the North Yorkshire Emergency Services for training purposes. An online competition to name the street will be taking place from 12th January to 28th February, with entrants asked to suggest up to three names for the street


before a judging panel determines a winning name that will become the training venue’s title.


The judging panel will be made up of colleagues from across the JTL Group, with their chosen winner invited to the street’s ribbon cutting. The winner will also receive £500 worth of Amazon.co.uk gift vouchers. BGES Group grows Southern team of smart building specialists


Due to growth, building controls specialist BGES Group has expanded its presence in London, with a move to larger premises and the addition of three specialist team members. Rob Ordish, of the company’s Sheffield headquarters, has been promoted to manage its southern and London regions in his new position of regional operations manager. He will be working with the regional director to deliver all South, Midlands and London operations (projects and service works).


“I’m excited to be part of the team building on opportunities from our London HQ,” Mr Ordish said. “Now, more than ever, estates teams need to find better ways to control building energy use, and smart building technologies offer huge, untapped potential for savings.”

Ordish and the southern team with coordination, scheduling and administration. “I was attracted to BGES Group by their strong reputation in the industry, and the wide variety of projects they are working. I’m delighted to be joining them at this pivotal stage in their growth.” Tom Lauder, who will take over as service manager for all the national and Northern service works. He will lead the growth and development of BG Service’s national and Northern contracts and head up the Energy and Control Centre (eCC) team. “BGES Group has big plans to improve its eCC and service offering in 2023. I’m looking forward to helping turn that ambition into reality.”


New recruits support Secon expansion


Heat pump distributor Secon Renewables has continued its expansion with two key appointments.

ensure Secon is well placed to offer tailored designs to housebuilders, while Joe Monkhouse joins the growing Sunderland- based business as northern sales manager. Simon has spent the last seven years working for Panasonic as UK business development manager and helping more than 50 housebuilders to transition from gas boilers to heat pump and renewable technology.


He said “I’m absolutely delighted to be joining Secon and heading up the new build division. I look forward to working with the dynamic team and leading in this important sector.’’


Joe Monkhouse has been in the industry for 14 years, initially with a focus on


underfloor heating and more recently in sales of air source and ground source heat pumps and MVHR.


He said: “I can’t wait to get started and take the quality products that Secon Renewables offer into the marketplace.’’
