SPONSORS INSTALLATION NEWS Illuminating Childbase!
L
uceco has recently lit brand new offices for the employee owned Childbase Partnership based in Newport Pagnell, who have been rated ‘World Class’ by Best Companies as well as a European Business
Award winner. Childbase runs 44 day nurseries in the South of England with the main objective of giving children the best possible start in life. Luceco lit the new facility at Childbase using suspended linear Black
Contour luminaires with Microprism Diffusers for the offices and meeting rooms, Element Adjustable for the sloping ceiling sections and Platinum Mini with matt reflectors for the circulation spaces. The electrical installation was completed by Summit Electrical Installations Ltd based in Walsall. The team on site were impressed with how the lighting helped to create the perfect high quality finish with the contract manager stating it was one of their favourite design and build projects to date. Luceco’s Contour LED luminaire was installed to provide contemporary
energy saving lighting which enhanced the architectural features of the interior design, the body of the luminaire in Matt Black. Contour
provides individual or continuous runs of illumination suitable for many commercial environments and can be surface mounted, suspended as at Childbase, or recessed. The LED lighting system consists of connectable modules with integrated drivers with quick electrical connectors for ease of installation and offers a 5 – 7 year extended warranty with over 100,000 hours operational life. With low ceilings throughout the interior, Luceco utilised the microprism diffusers to further lower the glare in the space and make it suitable for office applications in accordance with British Standards. Luceco’s Element adjustable downlighters were used on the sloping
ceiling areas to offer flexibility of light distribution, alleviating potential issues of fixed downlights in sloped ceiling plains and light spread missing the periphery of the rooms. Installation is made easy with a Plug and Play connector, specifically designed with a remote driver with a wire-in connector for first and second fix electrical installations, made possible by a loop in / loop out clip and fit terminal. Variants include standard

the facility forms part of what is Europe’s largest construction education campus, on a former brewery site. The three-storey, 4500m2 teaching building features Gilberts’ ventilation throughout, fusing both hybrid and natural ventilation into a cohesive strategy. As a result, 81no WHZ38 glazed louvres have been integrated into the aluminium façade (engineered by Elite Aluminium Systems) to provide natural airflow in and out of the common zones of the internal spaces. These are complimented by a further 73no MFS128 hybrid units strategically located at high level throughout the teaching zones (installed by Dodd Group (Midlands). The factory-built high performance WHZ38 louvres are purpose-
designed for inclusion into glazing systems, delivering Class A weather protection with 40% free ventilation area. The Department of Education’s school ventilation guidelines (BB101)
recommends the use of natural and/or hybrid ventilation within its buildings and the optimum method to balance and control temperature and air quality (CO2). Gilberts pioneered hybrid ventilation; its stand-alone MFS Fusion
was the first system of its type. MFS Fusion centres around stand-alone natural ventilation for each space/zone, complimented by an as/when needed mechanical boost, via a low energy fan. The system works by mixing the incoming fresh air with the warmer internal exhaust air to maintain compliant IAQ in each stand-alone space. The fresh air is drawn in through the façade at high level, and exhausted through the same route, once natural air movement principles have circulated the air throughout the space. Being at high level, and the fresh air tempered as it is drawn into the
interior space, there are no cold spots or draughts, optimising occupant comfort. Each MFS128 unit will efficiently and cost-effectively ventilate a typical 30 person classroom, costing as little as £5pa to operate(subject to energy prices). ilberts has risen to the challenge of delivering indoor air quality to a constantly evolving brief for a high profile, luxury hotel.
The new Virgin Hotel in Edinburgh is the first in the UK for the
global brand and has overcome a complex array of challenges in its construction over the past four years. The £65m, 222- bedroomed venue sits in the heart of the ancient city- a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Three listed buildings have been merged into a cohesive whole with the addition of new build elements and a suspended glass link bridge. The build team of ICA Studios (architects), Thomas Johnstone
(main contractors) and Emtec (building services) worked closely with the supply chain to deliver the brief. With not a single straight wall to work from within the existing fabric, the specification inevitably had to flex to accommodate almost daily discoveries and problems whilst enhancing as many of the original historic features as possible. Emtec turned to Britain’s leading independent air movement specialist Gilberts to supply all the ventilation grilles and diffusers to ensure supply and return of air from the variable refrigerant flow (VRF) system to the whole hotel. A stand-out element has been Gilberts’ GHV double deflection
grilles, specially produced in a bronze finish to sit within 200 years- old wood panelled walls. Gilberts provided a raft of different powder coated finishes to the
diverse LG linear bar grilles in the bedrooms. The DG4 louvre faced diffusers, GSF swirl diffusers and GSLS linear slot diffusers utilised to supply the correct ambient conditions throughout the hotel were similarly specified in various colours to reflect the aesthetics required for each area. Explained Bobby Armstrong, Senior Contracts Manager Building
Services @ Emtec, “Virgin as a brand is committed towards sustainability and is committed towards achieving LEED Gold or Silver standards in all of its hotels, hence the choice of VRF to cool and heat the Edinburgh hotel. The main issue for us was choosing grilles and diffusers that complimented and enhanced the building fabric, rather than try to mimic it. “Gilberts has been fantastic all the way through this technically challenging project, delivering the depth of detail and flexibility required to accommodate delivery of a build that began during the strictest Covid working practices.” The Virgin Edinburgh is one of a trio of luxury hotels in Scotland’s
“The Department for Education guidelines suggest hybrid ventilation. The M&E consultants CPW proposed the combination of Gilberts’ façade louvres and MFS Fusion hybrid ventilation, as delivering a quality solution. We were happy to accept that advice.” Gilberts (
