EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Energy cost concerns return as cap expires
T
The current scheme which caps the cost of energy will expire in March, meaning businesses face a reduction in energy support.
Firms will have to find new solutions for cutting
energy costs and it’s yet another worry for those already facing a challenging start to the year. Currently there is a freeze on energy prices but come the end of March this will be replaced with a scheme offering a disount on wholesale prices. It translates into a significant drop in government support which Chancellor Jeremy Hunt says has become ‘unsustainably expensive’. Now more than ever, businesses will have to examine their processes and procedures to find all areas where savings can be made. David Lloyd, head of Connected Buildings at Johnson Controls says it’s now about rallying to get
to grips with what, when and why their buildings are spending on energy to save on costs. For example, what equipment is using energy? What time it is turning on? Where is it turning on? Businesses just can’t afford to keep the lights on when they are not needed.”
So building managers need to be able to monitor data and analytics wherever they can to improve energy performance on site. But Smart solutions, though increasingly important, can also be prohibitively expensive. Our Smart Buildings & Controls feature starts on page 14 with the spotlight on new innovations in smart technology, financial solutions and many more areas where smart solutions can add value for commercial businesses.
