EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Net Zero key to attracting new talent

W

hile the industry has been consumed with the pandemic and the climate crisis over the last two years, the critical skills shortage

has taken a backseat.

The Construction Products Association has reported that more than 200,000 experienced workers have left the sector since summer 2019. Nearly half of these were aged between 45 and 55 with extensive experience gained over their careers. But many key industry figures are now saying that the challenges presented over the last couple of years, mean we need to change the conversation about skills. A focus on new skills, outlooks, backgrounds and perspectives should allow the sector to broaden its recruitment opportunities.

The Net Zero challenge will require input from skilled professions as varied as financial, IT/digital, creative, energy systems, design, health and wellbeing and also Artificial Intelligence.

While it’s true that the industry has a long history of developing innovative, state-of-the art solutions, to be fit for the future it must be able to attract from these wide-ranging backgrounds and abilities. This is where Net Zero will be key as its an issue close to the hearts of plenty of young people who are very keen to get involved. There’s no reason why they shouldn’t choose this sector, if we speak loudly and proudly enough about all it has to offer.
