Fernox revamps its commercial water treatment range
F
ernox has updated its range of commercial water treatment solutions. The new range
provides heating engineers with the solutions to treat and protect commercial heating and cooling systems, in the quantities needed across the majority of jobs. Thanks to high performance, concentrated
formulas, the Fernox commercial range of products provide installers with convenient to use, more economically sized water treatment solutions that are ideally suited to larger systems.
Cleaner F3 10 litre This universal cleaner can be used for the pre commission cleaning of new systems and has been specially formulated to remove flux residues, oil, grease and other installation debris, to maintain efficiency and avoid damage to system components. Its dispersant technology is suitable for all types of system water, making this product ideal for a wide range of projects. It is recommended to leave Cleaner F3 10 litre
in the system for up to one week under normal operating conditions. The nonfoaming formulation means it is easy to remove the product from the system after use, saving time on site and minimising disruption to the customer.
Protector F1 10 litre Once the system is cleaned, this high performance water treatment product works to prevent corrosion and limescale formation in commercial heating and cooling systems. Thanks to its excellent pH buffering, this product ensures that the system water remains at the optimum pH, thereby preventing corrosion in mixed metal systems to ensure optimum efficiency.
Even better still, Protector F1 10 litre combines organic, anodic and cathodic corrosion protection for maximum effectiveness and to ensure system longevity.
Leak Sealer F4 10 litre For a quick and easy fix for small, inaccessible leaks and weeps, Fernox has developed Leak Sealer F4 10 litre. Once dosed into the system, this internal leak sealer will find the area of oxygen ingress and form a polymer to seal the pinhole without causing blockages or restrictions on vulnerable system components such as pumps, air vents and safety devices. What’s more, a leak can be quickly and efficiently sealed without the need for a complete system drain down, minimising time on site.
Protector+ Filter Fluid F9 10 litre Designed for use with the Fernox commercial range of inline system filters, Protector+ Filter Fluid F9 10 litre is a unique inhibitor and dispersant package that has been designed to provide premium protection against corrosion and scale to suspend and deliver circulating debris within the system to an inline filter for safe collection and removal. It benefits from a high performance, nontoxic
formulation that has low environmental impact and has been approved by NSF CIAS and Belgaqua.

Whole house heating guide from Omnie
T
he latest Product Guide from OMNIE covers all aspects of underfloor heating as well as the manufacturer’s
holistic range of heat pumps, controls, ventilation and hot & cold water distribution. Indeed, these chapters reveal OMNIE’s philosophy of ensuring its five principal technologies work together in what it calls the Whole House System. OMNIE offers underfloor heating solutions
to suit all types of building, from newbuild to refurb, from offices to churches: embracing screeded floors, timber suspended and batten, floating and low buildup/overlay, and even acoustic options. Each of the floor types are covered in terms of imagery, heating performance and specifications while, for those that require more technical detail, a QR code is provided, which enables the reader to download data sheets and installation guides for each product. Towards the end of the 114 pages are contact details outlining how to obtain help and support for
architects and other specifiers, industry installers and homeowners, along with common questions and information on the RIBAapproved CPD courses. Finally, ‘Starting your project’ explains how to get a quote and specification, placing an order and information on servicing and commissioning. While UFH is accepted as optimising the performance of heats pumps, OMNIE can supply a full selection of air and ground source models, suitable for almost any building, irrespective of size, usage or heat loss characteristic. Then there are the advanced controls – including smartphone apps – and heat recovery ventilation systems available to ensure occupants not only enjoy efficiency and comfort but also a healthy indoor environment. The beautifully presented A4 book features highquality photography and technical drawings to support the various systems and the important fact that they are manufactured in an environmentally responsible way, using Britishmade component materials wherever possible – even the publication itself is made from carbon neutral paper. Whatever your project parameters or your past experience of specifying Whole House Heating
Systems, OMNIE has the product portfolio and expertise to help deliver a successful outcome. The new Omnie Product Guide can be downloaded from the website.

biggest food hall GPO at Liverpool’s Metquarter will be assured of a great atmosphere, thanks to the local air movement specialist with an international reputation, Gilberts. Double deflection grilles from the Blackpoolbased
W
ventilation manufacturer have been fixed into the distinctive oval ducting running the length of the main food hall in the Metquarter. The grilles ensure a consistent flow of fresh air without draughts nor transfer of aromas from one zone to another from the 12 independent kitchens in the converted former General Post Office. The strategy has been designed and installed by JD Engineering M&E contractor to the brief from development management company Queensberry and restauranteurs The Milestone Group. The open plan 11,000 sq ft food hall with exposed building services limited available space into which
to install the ventilation to ensure compliance with the diverse mix of
needs. To balance ventilation, extraction and odour control requirements within the space constraints, JD Engineering proposed flat oval ducting to run the length of the retail area, with Gilberts GHV double deflection grilles strategically positioned along the sides. Adjustable blade dampers, fixed horizontally to the front and vertically to the rear of the grilles circulate the conditioned air. The design delivers 70% free ventilation area, deflecting incoming air vertically and horizontally to optimise rapid mixing and entrainment without draughts. The separate dishwash area is addressed via Gilberts GECA removeable core eggcrate grille. The WCs are served by Gilberts’ GX extract valves specifically designed for removing stale air from washrooms.
Explained a spokesperson for JD Engineering, “Having 12 kitchens on one area, all providing very
different styles of cuisine, was a challenge for the ventilation, to ensure the dining experience was pleasurable and not diluted by an influx of potentially conflicting aromas from other areas. The constraint in ceiling height added a further dimension to address. Gilberts’ grilles matched the requirements in terms of the requisite throw and air distribution we needed, and provided the quality and appearance requirements.” Matt Bigland, Founder and Director at The Milestone Group, added, “GPO will be a hub for
Liverpool’s emerging food scene and will showcase the best in upandcoming food and drink talent in the heart of Liverpool. It was critical therefore that we got the internal atmosphere right, and the ventilation has been a crucial component in creating a vibrant environment for diners.”
Wicklow Hospice in Ireland, powered by Panasonic Heat Pumps P
anasonic AirtoWater Aquarea Heat Pumps are providing energy efficient heating and hot water to the Wicklow Hospice in Ireland.
Consultants, J V Tierney & Co and main mechanical contractors Quinn Downes Ltd, created a design for a low carbon heating system to service the facilities of this new hospice. The solution, featuring a Panasonic Aquarea H Series TCap system delivers a low environmental impact, requires minimal maintenance, and is highly energy efficient and yet costeffective. Base Engineering Ltd specified and installed six Aquarea H Series TCap 16kW units along with a Panasonic Cascade Controller to provide underfloor heating to 2022m2 of floor space to the new building. Although the original specification was for a ground source set up, local heat pump specialists, Base Engineering, instead recommended the Panasonic Aquarea air source heat pumps, along with the Panasonic Cascade Controller as more suitable for the project. JV Tierney & Co worked with Quinn Downes and Base Engineering to incorporate the airtowater
heat pumps into the existing design for the building, using the individual heat pumps’ controls, in addition to the Panasonic Cascade Controller to help provide equal run hours across all six heat pump units. This sophisticated control strategy offers a great deal of modulation and weather compensation to supply a more efficient and flexible solution to deliver a longer lifespan with minimal maintenance. The use of airtowater heat pumps in the system, complements the installation of 24 solar PV panels
on the roof of the building. The Panasonic heat pump system is able to use the free energy created by the solar panels to further boost the output by up to 400% in the creation of heat and DHW to further increase the energy efficiency of Wicklow Hospice. The building is heated by 2022m2 of underfloor heating made up of 13,000m of pipework, controlled by 68 thermostats throughout the facility. The 15 bedrooms are all 28m2 including ensuite facilities. Each of the six Panasonic Aquarea heat pumps links to a 1500L buffer tank which then provides hot water to the underfloor heating system across the entire facility. This scale of the Panasonic Cascade Controller presents a more efficient solution for commercial buildings. It helps to maximise the lifespan of the Panasonic Aquarea heat pump units, which can be intelligently managed to balance the load, and offers a contingency solution if maintenance is required, minimising downtime.
