EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Time to bring diverse skills into industry
T
he skills dilemma has long been an issue the engineering sector has grappled with but it’s time to eliminate all obstacles to getting the right people into industry jobs. According to ONS statistics, women make up just one per cent of skilled professionals working in the construction sector and there has been little change to this figure in the last decade.
But it’s not just women who take up fewer posts in the industry, there are many other under represented groups who arguably could bring important fresh perspectives to engineering businesses. The phrase ‘variety is the spice of life ‘applies
here particularly at a time when the industry is changing so much thanks to rapidly evolving technological advances.
This subject is tackled this month by the managing
director of the LCL Awards Mark Krull who explains why the sector needs these different points of view and how access to skills can be improved. (Pg 18) He suggests that varied perspectives can only accelerate innovation and that the training centre is the exactly the right place to engender diversity. • From a safety perspective, fire doors are an important consideration for any commercial business, but according to a recent survey only a quarter know how many they have. Further, this lack of knowledge makes it very difficult to carry out proper checks to make sure they are all working properly. On pg 4 Gavin Scarr Hall discusses the dangers for businesses and recommends a quick five-step weekly check to help them protect themselves.
