Wates pledges support for armed forces T
he Wates Group has strengthened its support for the military by signing BuildForce’s Veteran Alliance Charter, designed to support ex-service personnel into sustainable employment in the construction industry.
Wates will now work in partnership with industry-led initiative, BuildForce, which helps Armed Forces personnel to make decisions about their future careers. The pledge forms part of the Wates Group’s wider commitment to support all veterans and current members of the armed forces, which has also seen the business sign the Government’s Armed Forces Covenant.
As part of its growing partnership with BuildForce, Wates is hosting its first BuildForce Armed Forces Insight Day in Manchester and look forward to hosting other locations in the future.
Wates is currently developing a series of BuildForce Insight events, designed to introduce ex-military personnel and veterans to the industry and help reduce industry skill gaps.

Baxi Heating sponsors Smiths Racing for 2020 British Superbike Championship
eading commercial heating and hot water solution providers Baxi Heating have announced their continued sponsorship of Smiths Racing BMW for the 2020 Bennetts British Superbike Championship season. This will be the third successive season that Baxi Heating have sponsored the Smiths Racing BMW team in the UK’s leading road racing superbike racing series.

Representing Smiths Racing in this year’s championship are Peter Hickman, the world’s fastest road racer, who took an impressive sixth place in the BSB 2019 series and Alex Olsen, who made his promising debut with Smiths Racing at the end of last year’s championship.

In the meantime what can installers and specifiers do to reduce reliance on gas in existing buildings? The answer can be quite straightforward – use a hybrid system that can utilise more than one fuel input. Using the Advance SFUTS (Solid Fuel Universal Thermal Store) makes it easy to reduce the reliance on gas because it incorporates additional inputs for a wood burner and other appliances such as solar thermal or PV roof panels, off peak electricity or other inputs for sealed system central heating and mains pressure hot water.

With all the plumbing, controls and wiring pre-installed the unit is easy to install in any multi fuel system. Each input has a thermostat control pre wired to a junction box to control all inputs. Solar thermal is
not pre figured as panel suppliers usually supply a control package. The SFUTS unit can be specified in three domestic sizes – 210, 250 and 300 litres capacity – and can be supplied as suitable for sealed heating systems so underfloor heating and modern sealed system boilers can be incorporated. The sealed system unit meets G3 safety requirements with three levels of safety so wood burners can be safely installed on a pumped circuit. The unit is CE marked in addition to the HETAS listing. Hot water is mains fed for power showers and fast bath filling, using an internal high output coil as a heat exchanger through a thermal mixing valve. A small expansion vessel is used as a shock arrestor and a service valve is fitted. The first HETAS listing was awarded to Advance Appliances for their SFUTS multi fuel thermal store so it has third party attestation. More information at

PJH expands sales development team
Paula Wilson joins PJH as Sales Development Manager for the Northern & Scotland region, from one of PJH’s trade customers, Express Plumbing Supplies where she was showroom manager. With over 30 years’ experience in the bathroom and tile industry.
Joining PJH’s Southwest team is Darren Turner. Based in Bristol, Turner’s
previous roles as Showroom Manager for Active Plumbing Supplies and Regional Manager for Porcelanosa, place him in good stead for his new position as sales
development manager. Charlotte Hall joins the company’s Northern sales team. In her new role as sales development manager for the Northern regions, she will be responsible for growing and maintaining sales with both current and prospective retail and merchant customers.

sales team Kevin Potter has been appointed as national sales manager whereas Gary Banham advanced to the role as senior area sales manager for London. With 20 years of
experience in HVAC and 15 years in hot water, Potter’s contribution to the sales team was recognised and he was appointed as new national sales
manager, looking after a team of currently 13 sales managers across the UK. Gary Banham on the other hand only joined Hamworthy in December 2018. His work left such an impression, he was promoted to senior area sales manager for the London area. He will also be covering for his colleague Paul Fox who retired in December, taking care of key account management and specification in the region.
Albion hire warehouse apprence to help keep up with
increasing orders Jacob Wills is the fifth apprentice to join Albion’s warehouse team in as many years, he will be working in the warehouse fulfilling customer orders, which includes branding valves, building actuation packages and the setting and testing of safety valves.
Wills joined the company at 20 years old, completing his studies at school and college before entering
the working world. He was looking for a new challenge when the vacancy at Albion arose, he saw this as a great opportunity to build upon his education within a working environment.
