EDITOR’S COMMENT & CONTENTS Energy security still biggest business concern
E
nergy remains one of the biggest concerns for businesses countrywide so it follows that solutions and methods of energy saving are the theme
running throughout BSEE. According to recent research (PG5) from ABB,
there is widespread concern about the impacts of energy security and prices, which could be a catalyst for a range of environmental, social and economic ripple effects.
The study which canvassed 2,300 leaders from small
and large businesses across a range of sectors felt that their profitability and competitiveness was being threatened by instability in energy markets. This is causing business leaders to go back to the drawing board on how to run their businesses forcing them to make cuts in spending with areas such as R&D, technology and infrastructure taking the hit.
Some are also resorting to reducing investment in staff. The knock on effect is that sustainability targets and carbon reduction commitments are not being met as energy concerns are taking precedent over everything else. According to the study 83 per cent of businesses canvassed are concerned about the security of their businesses’ energy supply and around 34 per cent have increased investment in improving energy efficiency.
All the help businesses can get is welcome and
there are numerous and varied helpful innovations to be found across building services. Read about some of these from Trox (PG8), Gilberts (PG9), The Chilled Beam Association (PG12), Armstrong (PG18), Hoval (PG20) and Energy Assets (PG26).
